The Artistic Residence

Interior Design

The ink and wood artworks, coexist in the same space, represents two artistic conceptions, one of which indicates the dialogues between ink and walls, and the other displays the conversations between utensils and space integrated in the client's life style. In this project, the composed and down-to-earth character, of the client, brings up the specific scholar temperament who looks forward to coming back home, an artistic place for either relaxation or self-cultivation after busy work.

The Artistic Residence, designed by PoCheng Chu, YaYi Tsai, and YingYu Chen, is a unique and captivating interior design project that seamlessly blends art, architecture, and lifestyle. The designers drew inspiration from the concept of ink and wood artworks, creating a space that embodies the dialogue between ink and walls, as well as the interaction between utensils and the surrounding environment.

One of the standout features of this design is the use of abstract ink images on the main wall. The rectangular wall showcases a dry and realistic texture that represents the long-standing tradition of dark ink. This abstract ink painting serves as the focal point of the space, adding depth and artistic value to the overall design. Additionally, the rest of the paintings in the residence were created by the client, showcasing their spontaneous creativity and personal touch.

The Artistic Residence also incorporates elements of nature into its design. The dark hand-scraped wood floor and dining table bring a sense of balance to the rectangular space, while the weathered white oak veneer on the walls creates a serene and forest-like atmosphere. The use of plants throughout the space further blurs the boundary between the indoors and outdoors, creating a friendly and inviting environment for both residents and plants.

One of the design challenges of this project was to create a seamless connection between the living room and dressing room. The designers achieved this by incorporating a grassy area that acts as a transition between the two spaces, bringing a breath of fresh air and connecting the indoor and outdoor elements. Along the corridor, phalaenopsis pots are strategically placed to reflect the plants with black mirrors, creating a visually stunning effect and adding multiple dimensions to the space.

The Artistic Residence is not only visually captivating but also pays homage to the philosophy of oriental aesthetics. The wall plates with different angles showcase innovative modern craftsmanship, while the design of the space encourages residents to appreciate and embrace the beauty of simplicity and tranquility.

Completed in 2015 in Taichung City, The Artistic Residence is a testament to the creativity and vision of its designers. This project has received recognition in the design community and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2017 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach. The Artistic Residence is a true masterpiece that combines art, architecture, and lifestyle, creating a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.
