Cobra Pendant Light: Illuminating the Relationship Between Nature and Artificial Lighting

A Unique Design that Blends Art and Functionality

Light and nature have always been intertwined, shaping our perception and understanding of the world. Inspired by this profound relationship, designer Catarina Santos created the Cobra pendant light, a unique design that aims to explore the connection between artificial lighting and the natural world.

The Cobra pendant light is not just a lighting fixture; it is an art installation that invites contemplation and introspection. Designed to be installed with an indoor garden, it creates a specific language and conveys a message about the harmonious coexistence of nature and human action. The sleek and fluid shape of the Cobra, resembling a snake in motion, adds an element of intrigue and symbolism to any space.

What sets the Cobra pendant light apart is its ability to spark individualized thinking. By combining the functionality of a lighting product with thought-provoking design elements, it goes beyond mere illumination. The Cobra prompts questions about human nature, spirituality, ecological responsibility, and the impact of our consumption choices.

The Cobra pendant light is crafted using advanced aluminum sheet bending technology, resulting in its distinctive asymmetrical shape. The luminaire features HV5 LED Fortimo by Philips, the latest generation LED, and Xitanium drivers, ensuring optimal performance and energy efficiency. The curved polycarbonate diffuser is seamlessly integrated with a clip attachment system, providing a sleek and seamless appearance.

With a length of 9000mm and a curve radius of 1245mm, the Cobra pendant light is a statement piece that demands attention. Its downward light projection, activated by a motion sensor, creates a captivating ambiance and enhances the overall atmosphere of any space. The design is powder coated in RAL7016, giving it a textured matte finish that adds to its modern and minimalistic aesthetic.

The Cobra pendant light was conceived and developed for an office building in Portugal, specifically for Tromilux, a company specializing in technical lighting. The project was a collaboration between designer Catarina Santos and a team of talented individuals, including Catarina Montenegro, Francisco Silva, and Liliana Viana, among others.

This thought-provoking design project was developed between September and December 2020 and installed in January 2021. It will be on display indefinitely, serving as a testament to the power of design to evoke emotions and inspire meaningful conversations.

The Cobra pendant light has garnered recognition in the design community, receiving the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2021. This award celebrates designs that are well-crafted, innovative, and practical, meeting professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.

With its captivating design, the Cobra pendant light transcends the boundaries of traditional lighting fixtures, inviting us to reflect on our relationship with nature and the impact of our choices. It serves as a reminder that art and functionality can coexist harmoniously, enriching our lives and spaces.
