Modular: Redefining Urban Sanitation Tool Rooms

A New Approach to Public Infrastructure

Mainly inspired by the infrastructure construction in public places, He Qi and Xinbo Wang have designed the Modular series to provide sanitation workers with a more humane working environment. By reshaping the image of functional rooms, this innovative design aims to improve the modernized, intelligent, and humanized urban facility system.

Composed of modular spatial elements, the urban sanitation tool room series boasts flexibility and expansibility. It can be used as a separate sanitation room with different functions or combined as a multifunctional small public area. The interior design maximizes vertical space, improving the utilization of the room and allowing sanitation tools to be neatly organized.

The main structure of the Modular series is made of steel, ensuring durability and stability. The veneer is crafted from fluorocarbon painted aluminum plate, effectively resisting corrosion and scratches. The inner layer features galvanized steel wire mesh, flame retardant oxygen barrier film, rock wool heat insulation board, and waterproof roll. The bottom is made of silicon carbide floor adhesive, rendering it elastic, stable, and resistant to deformation.

With a footprint of approximately 10 square meters, the Modular series is designed to fit seamlessly into urban areas. It can serve as public lavatories, small tool storage rooms, sanitation workers' lounges, electric sweeper storage rooms, and hand push sanitation truck storage rooms. The prefabricated design allows for easy installation and transportation.

The project started in Shenzhen in April 2020, with the first products put into use in December 2020. By the end of 2021, more than one hundred Modular units are scheduled to be launched in Shenzhen. The design team, consisting of He Qi, Xinbo Wang, Xinyao Chen, Xuxiong Deng, and Jiangwen He, worked diligently to overcome various creative, technical, and research challenges.

The Modular series has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Modular series stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world.

The Modular series is not just a functional solution; it is a testament to the power of design to transform public spaces and improve the lives of sanitation workers. With its unique properties and thoughtful design, the Modular series is redefining urban sanitation tool rooms and setting a new standard for public infrastructure.
