The Nanxiang Incity project, designed by Zesion Design, is a visual guidance system that integrates the crane culture into a shopping mall. The design of the artistic signs, inspired by the activities of cranes, provides a storyline for customers, guiding them through their shopping experience. The idea was to create a deep impression of cranes in different scenes for every consumer visiting Nanxiang Yinxiang City.
What sets this design apart is the unique combination of crane shapes with signage. The designers transformed the daily form of cranes into the signage image using abstract art techniques. The result is a memorable visual experience for consumers, who are introduced to cranes in different scenes.
The realization of this design involved overcoming several technical challenges. The conventional light box, for instance, was not effective in blocking light, which weakened the effect of text and external outline on the box surface. To resolve this, designers adopted white ink blocking printing on the light sheet to overshadow the lighting of the textless part and make the text and external outline clearer.
The design process was a thoughtful integration of space function with local cultural creativity, offering guidance to customers' activities and providing them with a full set of services. The careful planning of designers is evident in all floor guide signs and introductions of merchants at the entrance and exit of the escalator and the intersections of customer flow.
The project, which took three years to complete, was based in Shanghai. It aimed to provide a place for residents in and around Shanghai to unwind. The design combines the cultural characteristics of Nanxiang, renowned for its cranes and temples, and creates a micro-vacation resort via planning of scenes.
In conclusion, Zesion Design's Nanxiang Incity is a unique visual signage system that has successfully integrated local culture into a shopping mall environment. It is a testament to the power of innovative design and has been rightly recognized with a prestigious Silver A' Design Award.
