Obsessive Love: A Film Festival Website Celebrating Alfred Hitchcock

A Unified and Holistic Aesthetic for Hitchcock's Films

There is a prevailing obsession with voyeurism running throughout Hitchcock’s oeuvre. He knew that human beings have a fascination with watching. We are naturally nosy, curious, and intrusive in our daily existence. As voyeurs, audiences somehow feel complicit in the events onscreen. This project, titled "Obsessive Love," attempts to incorporate the artistic expression of Alfred Hitchcock and five chosen films in two ways – through a consistent visual language and design deliverables that mesh together as an integrated system.

The hypothetical film festival project aims to celebrate the films of Alfred Hitchcock, a director known for his unique storytelling style and themes of voyeurism. The objective is to coordinate a complex set of materials that must function together as a whole. The idea is to marry multiple messages with divergent formats, all with a unified and holistic aesthetic that captures the essence of Hitchcock and his storytelling style.

The design of the "Obsessive Love" website is realized using technologies such as Adobe XD and Adobe Photoshop. The website dimensions are set at 1920px X 1080px, ensuring a visually immersive experience for users.

This project required extensive research and prototype testing to ensure a well-organized user interface and a pleasant user experience. By designing from a voyeur's perspective, the visual elements, user interface, and user experience all aim to make audiences feel complicit in the events onscreen, just like true voyeurs.

The "Obsessive Love" film festival website was created by Min Huei Lu, who embarked on the project in March 2019 and completed it in June 2019 in San Francisco. Lu faced various challenges during the design process, particularly in exploring and understanding Hitchcock's work and incorporating the depth and physical attributes of the voyeur's tools into the design.

This innovative and visually cohesive design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Website and Web Design category in 2021. The award acknowledges the outstanding and creatively ingenious design of the "Obsessive Love" film festival website, which authentically captures the experience and resourcefulness of Hitchcock's films. The design showcases strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
