Chen Kuan-Cheng's Lattice Chair: A Fusion of East and West

Award-winning Design Combines Bamboo Craft and Woodcraft

The Lattice Chair, named after the intricate pattern of lines that intersect each other horizontally and vertically, is a testament to Chen Kuan-Cheng's innovative approach to design. The chair's back and armrests flow downward in a lattice pattern, symbolizing the fusion of wood and bamboo. This design not only enhances the chair's visual appeal but also its structural integrity, allowing it to withstand more than 120 kg of weight despite weighing only 4 kg.

One of the unique features of the Lattice Chair is its single-sided armrest design. This innovative feature allows users to sit in a variety of ways, providing more freedom and flexibility. Moreover, the chair's lighter weight makes it easy for the elderly and children to move it around, adding to its practicality.

The Lattice Chair is made using Taiwan-specific Moso bamboo and bending technology, which enables the creation of small angle bends. The choice of materials, including Ash, engineered bamboos, and engineered wood (Formosan Michelia, beech), along with the natural wood wax oil finish, contribute to the chair's durability and aesthetic appeal.

The Lattice Chair project started in April 2019 in Taiwan and was completed in December 2019. Despite the challenges associated with bending wood and integrating it with bamboo, Chen Kuan-Cheng and his team were able to overcome these obstacles and create a series of furniture that is not only visually stunning but also functional and durable.

The Lattice Chair's innovative design and exceptional craftsmanship have earned it the prestigious Platinum A' Furniture Design Award in 2021. This award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing and make the world a better place.
