My Smoking Jackets: A Unique Loft-Style Residential House

A Fashionable Combination of Studio and Home

A concept of volume stacking for a small horizontal hexahedron is adopted to show the working area, living area, and public area. The main volume is the raised area of the living room, which also serves as a buffer between the working area and the living area to combine the aisles and stairs. Moreover, the main volume allows all natural light to be dispersed to the work area, living room, kitchen, and dining room, using a great deal of indoor glass and gray mirrors to enlarge the space visually.

A residential house designed for fashion designer Ya-Jung Yvane Hsieh, My Smoking Jackets is a unique and innovative loft-style home that seamlessly combines a studio working area with an apartment. The design utilizes a half-penetrating space to separate public and private areas, creating a versatile and functional living environment.

The main space of the house is a hall design that combines the living room and indoor balcony, allowing natural light to permeate the space and creating a visually amplified effect. This composite space allows the residents to allocate their living areas according to their working hours, providing flexibility and convenience in their daily lives.

The use of a large number of indoor glass and gray mirrors enhances the overall black, white, and gray color scheme, giving the space a cool and cohesive aesthetic. The working area is partially adorned with gray and blue accents, adding a touch of professionalism to the studio atmosphere.

Despite its compact size of less than 90 square meters, My Smoking Jackets includes a well-designed layout that encompasses an entrance area, a studio and desk for work, a fitting area, a living room, a main bedroom, a kids room, a kitchen, a dining room, and two bathrooms. The design maximizes the functionality of the space while maintaining a sense of openness and comfort.

The realization of My Smoking Jackets involved the use of eco-friendly paint, gray glass, gray mirrors, wood veneer treated by steel brushing, quartz tile, and steel stairs. The project was completed in December 2017 in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

My Smoking Jackets is a testament to the designer's creativity and ingenuity in overcoming the challenges of designing a small space. By incorporating a stacking concept and considering the integration of natural light and ventilation, the design successfully creates a combination space that fulfills both the needs of a fashion studio and a comfortable family home.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges the outstanding and resourceful nature of the design, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology. My Smoking Jackets exemplifies strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
