Ship 79: A Unique Seafood Restaurant with a Cabin-like Ambience

Bringing the Freshness of Seafood to Life

Inspired by the cabins, Xiongbiao Luo from Guangzhou Mushi Design extracts the N-shape, a basic element of the cabins, and reorganizes the space using abstract design techniques and diversified materials. This unique approach forms an exclusive identity for the brand, making it stand out in the market.

The space mainly adopts a modern minimalist style, with warm yellow tones and natural wooden and rattan materials. These elements create a primitive simplicity reminiscent of fishing boats, bringing a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to the restaurant. Bent lines, curved ceilings, and U-shaped partitions echo each other, adding visual interest to the overall design.

The semi-private rooms feature hollowed arc partitions and rattan screens, providing privacy while allowing customers to enjoy the freshness of the surroundings, as if they were sitting in a cabin. Water corrugated glass partitions separate the rooms, creating a sparkling visual effect under the light. The corridor extends the water wave theme, making the space transparent and reducing the feeling of closure. The window booths, designed to resemble travel boxes, offer a fun and scenic dining experience.

The lobby is paved with terrazzo, evoking memories of ancient times. Gray leather seats soften the space, providing comfort to diners. The multi-level changes in the ceiling create a thought-provoking atmosphere. Linear glass windows simulate the viewing windows of cabins, enhancing spatial permeability.

One of the design challenges was to convey the concept of distant floating fishing boats through plain linear lighting, creating a simple and agile space. The use of removable components allows for easy recycling, contributing to sustainability.

The Ship 79 Restaurant project started in April 2020 and was completed in November 2020 in Shenzhen. The design received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding creativity and resourcefulness of the design, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology.
