Diplomatic Relations: A Visual Identity by Salvita Bingelyte

Symbolizing Unity and Friendship Through Design

Salvita Bingelyte, an acclaimed designer, has created a unique visual identity for the German Embassy in Vilnius, Lithuania. The design, titled "Diplomatic Relations," is a testament to the long-standing relationship between Lithuania and Germany, and it was awarded Silver in the A' Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design Award in 2021.

The inspiration for this design stems from the rich history shared by Lithuania and Germany. The two nations have maintained bilateral relations since 1918, and this was reestablished in 1991 after Lithuania regained its independence shortly after Germany's reunification. Bingelyte's design is a tribute to this enduring connection, symbolizing the unity and friendship between the two countries.

The logo's unique properties lie in its representation of the national flags of both countries. Bingelyte has created three check marks for each country, using the colors of their respective flags. These marks are depicted as two parallel sides, much like train tracks moving in opposite directions, yet converging and remaining connected. The red check marks are combined, further symbolizing the unity between Lithuania and Germany.

The design was realized using a simple yet effective technology. The symbol of Lithuanian-German cooperation can be easily applied to stationery, outdoor advertising, and corporate gifts. When combined in a single line, the symbols create a pattern that can be utilized in various contexts. To maintain the original colors and enhance the logo's visibility, a colored symbol on a white background was chosen.

The logo's interaction is a visual representation of the diplomatic unity between the two countries. It reflects the moment when Lithuania and Germany move forward together into the future. The colorful marks provide a dynamic symbol, expressing the multifaceted relationship between the two nations.

The design project was initiated in January 2021 and completed in February 2021 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The underlying research for this design focused on the national flags of both countries, which are easily recognizable symbols. Bingelyte sought similarities between the two flags and found that the same patterns stood out. This led to the decision to find symbols that could seamlessly utilize these patterns, resulting in the check marks as a logical design solution.

Despite the challenges faced during the design process, Bingelyte was able to create a modern and memorable logo design. This design will be used by the German Embassy in Lithuania for its external communication, events, and promotional goods. The logo design showcases the flags of Lithuania and Germany, conveyed through the symbol of check marks. The red check marks are combined, representing friendship and unity between the two countries. The overall design reflects the moment when two countries diplomatically unite, moving forward together into the future. The colorful marks are multifaceted, expressing the dynamic and tight relationship between Lithuania and Germany.
