Heito 1909: A Historical Urban Park Reimagined

ECG International Landscape Consultants Transform an Abandoned Factory into a Unique Urban Space

The inspiration for Heito 1909 came from the excavation of the historical remains of the factory. The designers realized that the destruction of such buildings meant the erasure of significant periods of history. With this in mind, they set out to preserve and celebrate the factory's past, transforming it into a space that tells the story of its former life.

Heito 1909 stands out for its ability to trace back to several significant eras, including the colonists era, World War II, and the post-war industrial era. The park is the first industrial landscape adaptive reuse project in Taiwan, transforming an industrial ruin into an urban recreation space and reforming a polluted river into a natural habitat.

The designers used point cloud laser scanning for precise mapping of the historical remains. This technology produced accurate data for historical documentation and precise 3D drawing. The team also used parametric design to build pavilions around the historical remains, creating a gradual sequence that guides visitors through the park.

The project faced several challenges, including public and sector skepticism about the value of preserving an old, "ugly" industrial park. The team also had to constantly revise the design solution due to the unpredictability of what lay underground. Despite these challenges, the project was completed in two phases, from June 2018 to January 2021.

Heito 1909 serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving history in the face of constant change. The park is a rare example of adaptive reuse, incorporating the ruins and damaged structures into urban facilities for citizens to experience. The project was awarded Silver in the A' City Planning and Urban Design Award in 2021, a testament to its innovative and remarkable design.
