Horace Lam's Award-Winning Design Fuses Art, Technology, and User Creativity

Horace Lam's inspiration for the MABY Smart Lighting System came from observing his three-year-old son playing with blocks. This sparked an idea for a product that could inspire and connect people of all ages. The concept received immediate recognition, securing invention patent funding from Hong Kong and five other countries. Lam's son, his biggest cheerleader, has been a constant source of motivation throughout the design process.

The MABY Smart Lighting System is unique in its ability to inspire creative expression. It consists of four different 2D shapes, or cells, that users can assemble into any structure they envision. The cells are equipped with sensors for greater user control, and the system includes a series of beautifully colored pattern plates, known as MABY Skin, to enhance the aesthetic of the creations.

The technical realization of the MABY Smart Lighting System required significant research and development. Lam started with the vision of 3D shapes that users could freely build, similar to his son's blocks. He then deconstructed these shapes into 2D cells for maximum building flexibility. The design process involved careful consideration of the plastic case and precise PCB design/lighting inside compact cells, as well as the torque exerted on the connectors.
