Bubble: A Revolution in Backpack Design

3D Printed Photochromic Backpack by Jingyi Wu and Liyuan Bao

Introducing Bubble, a 3D printed photochromic backpack that changes color under sunlight, inspired by the natural phenomenon of foam bubbles. This innovative design, created by Jingyi Wu and Liyuan Bao, offers a unique visual experience, transforming the way users perceive and interact with their backpacks.

Jingyi Wu and Liyuan Bao drew inspiration from the colorless and transparent foam bubbles that, when refracted by sunlight, produce a spectrum of colors. Applying this concept to their design, they created a backpack that changes color under sunlight, offering a unique and engaging visual experience to users.

The Bubble backpack is assembled using shoulder straps and zippers after 3D printing of translucent resin materials. The unique photosensitive color bubble shape not only provides a novel user experience but also reflects the user's identity and personality. In today's market, where bags and suitcases have transcended their functional roles, the Bubble backpack stands out with its unique design and material.

The backpack is made using advanced 3D printing technology and photosensitive color-changing materials, catering to the current user needs for popular modeling and color elements. The resin used in the printing material is a newly researched material that displays different colors under varying light conditions.

The design of the Bubble backpack is based on elements of fashion, publicity, and youth. It highlights the user's uniqueness and offers a new experience that is distinct from the similar and boring designs available in the market. The project started in April 2016 in Beijing and was completed in August 2018. It was exhibited at the Beijing Institute Of Fashion Technology in April 2018.

Despite the challenges encountered in handling the materials and the difficulties in the 3D printing process due to the design's uniqueness, Jingyi Wu and Liyuan Bao successfully overcame these issues, resulting in a product that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. The Bubble backpack was awarded the Silver in A' Fashion and Travel Accessories Design Award in 2021, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
