OneSky Global Centre: A Transformative Children's Center in Hong Kong

Providing Free Child Services for At-Risk Families

The PC Lee OneSky Global Centre is a groundbreaking project designed by Vicky Chan, Crystal Hu, and Gianfranco Galagar of Avoid Obvious Architects. This 16,000 square foot children's center is located in Sham Shui Po, the poorest district in Hong Kong, and aims to provide free child services for at-risk families. With its unique design and focus on positive parenting techniques, the center is set to make a lasting impact on the community.

The PC Lee OneSky Global Centre is not just an ordinary children's center. It is a place where families in need can find support, education, and a sense of belonging. The design of the center is inspired by the philosophy of OneSky teaching, which emphasizes the importance of positive parenting techniques and showing affection towards children.

One of the key features of the center is its warm and welcoming exterior. The use of striking colors and natural materials creates a visually appealing facade that stands out in the busy intersection of Sham Shui Po. The semi-outdoor lobby and its bench turn the street corner into a lively oasis, inviting both children and adults to come in and explore.

Inside the center, the focus is on creating relational spaces that connect parents, teachers, and children. The three-story building is designed to provide different areas for children of different age groups. The ground floor features a 5-meter-tall communal space with a play structure and wall arts, creating a vibrant and interactive environment for children to learn and play.

The first floor is dedicated to a licensed childcare center for children aged 0 to 3. It includes classrooms, a playful toilet, a kitchen, and a play area. The use of white walls, wooden flooring, and wooden furniture creates a subdued and natural environment that allows children to focus and learn. The bright and contrasting colors in the toilet area are intentionally used to make toilet training a different and engaging experience for young children.

The second floor of the center is a flexible playroom for children aged 3 to 6. It also houses the office and training center for parenting and teaching skills. One-way mirrors are strategically placed in certain locations to allow non-disruptive observation for adult training.

The design of the PC Lee OneSky Global Centre was not without its challenges. The project had to adapt to the constraints of the existing building, including water leakage, smell, and undocumented structures from the previous owner. However, the design team successfully incorporated these constraints into their solutions while staying true to the teaching methodology and vision of the center.

The completion of the PC Lee OneSky Global Centre is a significant milestone for the community of Sham Shui Po. With its generous indoor and outdoor spaces, the center provides a much-needed play space for children in the neighborhood. Additionally, the training center offers valuable tips on parenting and teaching skills, empowering parents and educators to create a nurturing environment for the children.

The PC Lee OneSky Global Centre is a testament to the power of design in transforming communities. By providing free child services for at-risk families and creating a space for connection and learning, this project is making a positive impact on the lives of thousands of children and parents in Hong Kong.
