Schwarzwald Recipe: A German Bakery in Taipei City

Authentic German Cuisine in the Heart of Taipei

The Schwarzwald Recipe bakery in Taipei City brings the flavors and atmosphere of Germany's Black Forest to the bustling streets of Taiwan's capital. Designed by Matt Liao and his team at D.More Design Studio, this bakery offers a unique and authentic experience for food enthusiasts.

The inspiration for the design of Schwarzwald Recipe came from a combination of romantic fairy tales and the concise impressions of Germany. The bakery features two wooden cabins filled with bread, reminiscent of the cozy cottages found in the Black Forest. Surrounding the cabins are iconic Bauhaus chairs, creating a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary design elements.

The facade of the bakery showcases the timber frame patterns seen in traditional German houses, translated into steel frame shelves. The use of dark colors throughout the interior represents the mysterious and enchanting atmosphere of the Black Forest, the birthplace of the secret recipes behind the delicious German cuisine served at Schwarzwald Recipe.

Located in a mixed-use district of Taipei City, Schwarzwald Recipe is the brainchild of a Taiwanese lady who lived in the Black Forest area of Germany for many years. Her food brands, including Schwarzwald Recipe, have gained recognition as some of the most authentic German food establishments in Taipei.

The bakery spans an area of 120 square meters, excluding the kitchen, and boasts a nearly square proportion of approximately 11 meters by 11 meters. The design incorporates materials such as steel, solid wood moldings, wood veneer sheets, black mirrors, vinyl, and tiles to create a visually stunning and functional space.

Since its opening in July 2017, Schwarzwald Recipe has become a popular spot for locals in the neighborhood. Customers flock to the bakery for their morning coffee and bread or to indulge in a traditional German meal for lunch or dinner. The cozy wooden cabins filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The design project for Schwarzwald Recipe began in April 2017 and was completed in July of the same year in Taipei, Taiwan. The design team, led by Matt Liao, faced the challenge of incorporating foreign traditional elements into a contemporary design. Through meticulous research on traditional German houses, the Black Forest, and Bauhaus designs, they successfully brought the essence of Germany to Taipei City.

The exceptional design of Schwarzwald Recipe has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges the creativity and ingenuity of the design, which authentically captures the experience and resourcefulness of German culture. The design showcases strong technical and creative skills, contributing to an improved quality of life for visitors and making the world a better place.
