Life Extension: A Paradigm Shift in Residential Design

Pin-Chi Yu's Award-Winning Design Revolutionizes Conceptual Space

Pin-Chi Yu's Life Extension project, an innovative residential house design, redefines the traditional concepts of space and form. This design, which won the Platinum A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018, pushes the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, offering a unique living style.

Yu's inspiration for Life Extension came from the parametric model, a tool that allowed him to create a new design language. This language combines form and logic, transcending mere presentation skills to become a design concept in itself. This concept serves as a bridge between the designer and space, influencing future design thinking modes.

The uniqueness of Life Extension lies in its approach to space syntax. According to Yu, there is no right or wrong in space syntax; it is only sustainable if it meets the user's demands. Through bold experimental works, Yu explores all aspect responsibilities in a functional house, seeking a different living style. This pursuit is an insistence on attitude, a defining characteristic of Yu's design philosophy.

Life Extension was realized using GRG, GRP, EPOXY, and PanDOMO technologies. These materials allowed Yu to create a design characterized by curves, freeform, and parameterization. The design also features a unique interaction mechanism, with the relationship of three axes and the connection of areas being key elements. The design process was completed between May 2015 and June 2017.

Yu's design research was grounded in the parametric model, which he used to create a new design language. This language combines form and logic, influencing future design thinking modes. The design challenges Yu faced were primarily related to space syntax. Through bold experimental works, Yu explored all aspect responsibilities in a functional house, seeking a different living style.

Life Extension has been recognized for its world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative design. It was awarded the Platinum A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018, recognizing its contribution to societal wellbeing and its role in defining the aesthetics of an era. The design's visual content was captured by photographer Ar Her Kuo.
