Kaleidoscope: A Cozy and Varied Kindergarten Design

Creating a Flexible and Engaging Educational Space

The design of Kaleidoscope, a kindergarten project by Edudesign, draws inspiration from the captivating imagery of a kaleidoscope. By incorporating colored abstract highlights and mirrors, the design creates a cozy and varied interior that stimulates children's imagination and creativity.

The main objective of the Kaleidoscope project was to create a space that offers a multitude of functions and scenarios for children. This principle was applied not only to the main group room but also to other areas of the kindergarten, such as the 3D physical education complex, music hall, workshop, and pool. Each space was carefully designed to provide a dynamic and engaging environment for children to learn and play.

One of the notable strengths of the Kaleidoscope design is its ease of implementation, environmental friendliness, and use of manufacturable finishing materials. The project prioritizes sustainability and ensures that the space is both visually appealing and practical for everyday use.

The design features adjustable and stackable furniture made from plywood, providing flexibility and adaptability to the changing needs of the children. By incorporating mobile tables and stackable chairs, the design allows for easy reconfiguration of the space, promoting independence and the ability to make choices.

The transformative nature of the design is evident in the group room, which is divided into two parts by a sliding transformable partition. This partition allows for the creation of independent zones, such as play and bedroom areas, without reducing the overall space. The design also includes soft stands on the walls for displaying children's drawings and applications, as well as open shelves and accessible materials, encouraging children to engage in creative activities and play.

The Kaleidoscope project was conceptualized and realized in Moscow, Russia in 2021. The design team, led by Edudesign and Anna Shagalina, conducted extensive research to create an interior that would foster comprehensive development in children. The inspiration for the design came from the transformation of a white room when light passes through colored glass, resulting in changing shades and colors throughout the day.

The Kaleidoscope design overcame various creative, technical, and research challenges to become a versatile and sustainable solution for kindergartens. Its adaptability to different room configurations and alignment with the principles of sustainable design make it a potential model for future educational spaces.

Kaleidoscope, with its emphasis on flexibility and engagement, aims to create an educational environment that encourages children to be active, independent, and develop essential communication skills. The design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2022 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award acknowledges the practicality, innovation, and fulfillment provided by well-designed creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
