Harry's Newsstand: A Modern Take on a Classic Concept

Celebrating Tradition and Innovation at Grand Central Terminal

As an e-commerce business, Harry's embraces the opportunity to create physical touch-points for their customers and the community. This past holiday season, they unveiled a short-term retail experience that showcased both their grooming products and brand. Located in the historic Grand Central Terminal in midtown Manhattan, the Harry's Newsstand blended seamlessly into the backdrop of this iconic transportation hub, paying homage to its heralded past while adding a modern twist.

When conceptualizing the space, Harry's drew inspiration from the classic news stalls of the 1920s and 30s that once populated Grand Central Terminal. The design team added their own modern aesthetic in a thoughtful and complimentary way, creating a Newsstand that was both nostalgic and contemporary. The result was a beautiful point of interaction for daily commuters, tourists, and shoppers.

Measuring 2413 mm wide, 1422.4 mm deep, and 2653.3 mm tall, the Harry's Newsstand stood as a free-standing structure within the terminal. The design team utilized a combination of carrara white marble, white oak, dimensional lettering, and frosted glass with vinyl lettering to achieve their intended aesthetic. Pull-out shelving and backlit lighting added functionality to the Newsstand, allowing customers to easily browse and purchase Harry's grooming products and accessories.

What set the Harry's Newsstand apart was its attention to detail and unique features. The design team created a custom newspaper for daily commuters to enjoy on their train rides, featuring content created by Harry's in-house editorial team. This added a personal touch and further engaged customers with the brand. Additionally, to celebrate the holiday season and pay tribute to Grand Central's past, Harry's created a printed map of the terminal that doubled as wrapping paper. The map was illustrated by R. Kikuo Johnson, adding an artistic element to the overall experience.

Throughout the project, the Harry's design team faced the challenge of designing a Newsstand that attracted customers, represented their modern brand, and seamlessly blended into the historic backdrop of Grand Central Terminal. By carefully selecting materials, incorporating custom printed collateral, and paying attention to every detail, they successfully created a space that achieved all of these goals.

The Harry's Newsstand project started in October 2015 and ended in January 2016. During this time, it served as a valuable tool for reaching a local set of customers during their commute, exposing more people to the Harry's brand. The Newsstand also provided an opportunity for Harry's to test and drive redemption back to their own website through the use of incentive cards.

The Harry's Newsstand project was not only a successful retail experience but also a recipient of the prestigious A' Design Award in 2016. This Silver A' Design Award recognized the exceptional expertise and innovation demonstrated in the design. The Newsstand impressed with its strong technical characteristics, splendid artistic skill, and ability to evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

Harry's Newsstand at Grand Central Terminal exemplifies the brand's commitment to making getting ready better for everyone, every day. By creating a physical space that combines tradition and innovation, Harry's has successfully engaged customers and created a unique and memorable retail experience.
