Jessica Zhengjia Hu's Award-Winning Minimalist Design

Jessica Zhengjia Hu's inspiration for Rebirth came from the often overlooked energy of winter. As she explains, "Winter should not be associated with decline. It is the hope of dawn and rebirth of a year." This philosophy is reflected in her designs, which aim to reveal the lively spirit of this low-key season with stylish tones.

The collection stands out for its adherence to the minimalist design principle of "less is more". By utilizing simple silhouettes and clean garment outlines, Hu creates a fresh and cool visual appearance. The addition of slightly exaggerated and asymmetric structures, oversized details, and a color palette of low saturated greyish tones, adds visual tension and a gentle, graceful feeling to the looks.

The technical realization of Rebirth involved the use of regular knit jersey, Lycra, cashmere, and woolen fabrics. Distinct details such as exaggerated collars, asymmetric pleats, and special Velcro loop closures were incorporated to generate visual impact. The Morandi color palette, a group of low saturated colors with greyish tones, was used to create a neutral gentle temperature for the environment.

One of the challenges Hu faced was making simple silhouettes attractive while adhering to minimalist principles. She overcame this by carefully selecting colors from the Morandi palette that could blend well with each other and fit the winter atmosphere. This approach allowed her to maintain the garments' simple and neat silhouettes while creating layers and visual tension.

Rebirth was launched and presented during the Vancouver Fashion Week in March 2019, after a design process that spanned from July to December 2018 in Shenzhen, China. The collection's unique interpretation of winter aesthetics and minimalist design principles earned it the Iron A' Design Award in 2022, a prestigious accolade awarded to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations.
