The Planetary Ring series, designed for young urban explorers with a yearning for the unknown, shrinks the vastness of space to a wearable scale. The designers have incorporated Swedish M meteorites, which fell to Earth billions of years ago, into the design of rings and necklaces. The result is a piece of jewelry that not only looks cool but also rotates like a planet as the wearer moves.
What sets the Planetary Ring series apart is its dynamic nature. Unlike traditional jewelry, which remains static, these pieces are alive, rotating with the wearer's movements. The designers have retained the unique "Wedmanster Pattern" on the surface of the meteorites, a pattern that cannot be artificially replicated, adding to the uniqueness of each piece.
The production process of the Planetary Ring series is sustainable and eco-friendly. The meteorite material undergoes no electroplating anti-oxidation treatment, meaning the surface texture changes over time due to oxidation. The 925 silver support structure is linked with the meteorite through a bearing structure, with no welding points.
The design process was not without its challenges. The designers had to figure out how to polish an iron meteorite into a standard oblate shape while retaining the beautiful "Wedmanster pattern". They also had to find a way to ensure the smooth rotation of the meteorites, simulating the rotation of planets. The solution was embedding a miniature bearing in the center of the meteorite, with the diameter of the bearing structure being only 1 mm.
The Planetary Ring series was designed by Yan Li and Jiabin He under the jewelry brand of astronomical aesthetics, HELIO. The project started in April 2020 in Beijing and was completed in October of the same year. The series was exhibited on Taobao in November 2020.
This innovative jewelry design has been awarded the Silver A' Design Award, a prestigious recognition given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
