Universe in a Necklace: Ezra Satok-Wolman's "I Am Hydrogen"

Winner of A' Jewelry, Eyewear and Watch Design Award, "I Am Hydrogen" is a Marvel of Design and Craftsmanship

Renowned designer Ezra Satok-Wolman's "I Am Hydrogen" necklace and brooch set is a unique blend of art, science, and philosophy. Inspired by the Neoplatonic philosophy of 'Macrocosm and Microcosm', this award-winning design explores the universal constants of design and the fundamental building blocks of the universe.

Ezra Satok-Wolman's "I Am Hydrogen" is a stunning piece of jewelry that doubles as a brooch. The design is a testament to the designer's ingenuity and craftsmanship. The necklace features a handmade hollow torus, hammered from flat sheet in two halves and soldered closed to create a symmetrical hollow form. The torus is then mathematically divided, with spheres soldered at specific intervals. A special reflective thread is woven around the torus, creating a design that mimics phyllotaxis patterns observed in nature. The pattern is highly reflective and visually stunning when hit by light at various angles.

The realization of this design involved a meticulous process. Starting with the alloying process, a 19k yellow gold was selected for the hollow torus, and an 18k palladium white gold alloy for the spheres. The necklace itself was made by hand using Japanese silk and reflective thread, in the method of Japanese Kumihimo braiding and secured to the torus pendant using a mechanical post and knot system. The post was embellished with a rare natural violet diamond.

The design was inspired by the Neo-Platonic philosophy of macrocosm and microcosm, seeing the same patterns reproduced throughout all levels of the cosmos. Referencing the golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence, the necklace features a mathematical design that mimics the phyllotaxis patterns observed in nature, as seen in sunflowers, daisies, and various other plants. The golden torus represents the Universe, enveloped in the fabric of space-time. "I Am Hydrogen" simultaneously represents a model of "The Universal Constant of Design" and a model of the Universe itself.

The design project started in June 2013 in Caledon and finished in December 2013 in Caledon. The necklace has been featured in British Vogue, ELLE UK, and Harper's Bazaar UK. It was awarded the Golden in A' Jewelry, Eyewear and Watch Design Award in 2014, a testament to the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.

Despite the challenges faced in the creation of the hollow torus, the final product is a testament to the designer's skill and creativity. The design is a perfect blend of art and science, showcasing the beauty of the universe in a wearable piece of jewelry. It is a reminder of the interconnectedness of all things, from the smallest atom to the largest galaxy.
