Tanjing Display Center: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Nature

Shanghai PTArchitects' Award-Winning Design Showcases Cultural Integration and Innovative Space Utilization

In the heart of Wuxiang Lake, Nanning, stands the Tanjing Display Center, a testament to the harmonious blend of architecture and nature. Designed by Shanghai PTArchitects, the center is a unique embodiment of the city's diverse cultural veins, offering a vibrant space viewing experience that blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The Tanjing Display Center is located in a prime area with easy traffic access and complete surrounding facilities. The architects' respect for history and reverence for the land is evident in the design, which integrates Nanning's diverse cultural elements. The result is a series of community facilities that reflect the city's current urban conditions. Interestingly, there is no consistent style or aesthetics across the Tanjing architecture series. Instead, the connection lies in the living environment that people feel is closely related to the city's urban conditions.

What sets the Tanjing Display Center apart is its harmonious integration of architecture and nature. The unique facade design extends from the facade down the street to the interior lobby and multi-entrance courtyard, effectively blurring the indoor and outdoor boundaries. The center is built with an entrance square, ecological landscape steps, a characteristic art corridor, a semi-outdoor swimming pool, and a health technology clubhouse, among other areas. This design approach creates a diversified future life landscape.

The architectural form of the center is a building group fully integrated with the environment. The design extracts curves from the changes of mountain and water landscape forms as the lines of the building facade. This modern interpretation of Nanning's natural landscape is atmospheric and simple. The main entrance, built with rock slices stacked into spreading curves, creates a tense urban interface. The Entrance Square, designed with "Wood" as the main concept, allows vital trees to pass through the top, metaphorically indicating the phoenix in the phoenix tree.

The design of the Display Center subtly arranges the entrance at the end of the art promenade, combined with the shape of rock slices elements, interpenetrating with the pool and merging with the reflection. Under the light and shadow projection, it looks like a bright phoenix eye. This design approach posed a challenge in the cultural context of local characteristics, particularly in integrating local multi-cultural elements and designing pedestrian circulation in the post-epidemic era.

The Tanjing Display Center project started in March 2020 and was completed in November 2020 in Nanning, China. The design was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022, a prestigious accolade granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. These venerated products and bright ideas advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
