Catch Tracking, developed by Studio Syamo, is a fishing app that provides fishermen with a comprehensive and user-friendly tool at their fingertips. This digital solution not only simplifies the process of obtaining fishing licenses but also offers features such as instant catch auto-fill, a fish measurement tool, and a detailed report of fishing activities that can be submitted to the authorities.
One of the key strengths of Catch Tracking is its ability to provide real-time information and resources to fishermen. The app includes a comprehensive list of species that can be consulted, a map displaying the locations of fishermen, and direct contact with the authorities. This ensures that fishermen have access to the most up-to-date information and can make informed decisions while out on the water.
The design and development of Catch Tracking followed a standard process for creating digital products. Studio Syamo conducted extensive research, including field studies, surveys, and user interviews, to gather insights and understand the needs of fishermen. This research informed the analysis phase, where user personas, user journeys, and feature definitions were established. The design phase involved creating wireframes, mood boards, and high-fidelity mockups, while the testing phase included usability tests and surveys to refine the app's functionality and user experience.
Catch Tracking leverages native system features such as geolocation and measurement to enhance its functionality. Geolocation allows for the automatic filling of the user's location within the app, while the measurement tool enables fishermen to digitally enter the length of their catch. This not only benefits the fishermen but also minimizes unnecessary contact and potential harm to the fish, promoting the conservation of fishery fauna.
The Catch Tracking app is structured into three main areas: Species, Compiling, and Maps. The Species section provides an exhaustive list of fish species in the region, while the Compiling section allows fishermen to record their catches. The Maps section displays all fishing areas with relevant information. Additional sections include Profile, which contains data and graphs related to fishermen's seasons, and Menu, which provides access to contacts, regulations, user details, sessions, settings, and notices.
The Catch Tracking project began in March 2021 and had its first prototype release and test phase in January 2022 in Lugano, Switzerland. Throughout the development process, Studio Syamo conducted fishing sessions and surveys to gather insights and ensure the app's effectiveness in addressing the limitations of the paper-based system.
One of the main challenges faced by Studio Syamo was delivering an innovative product that seamlessly transitioned from paper to digital. The team aimed to create a user-friendly experience suitable for both tech-savvy and less tech-savvy users. To achieve this, they focused on maintaining consistency with the existing system, balancing the amount of displayed information, and creating a recognizable and intuitive design system.
The Catch Tracking app features a design that reflects the international typographic style, commonly known as Swiss Style. By embracing simplicity and removing unnecessary embellishments, the app allows fishermen to focus on the information presented and make informed decisions. This functional evolution from the traditional paper booklet to a digital tool empowers fishermen to engage in conscious and sustainable fishing practices.
Recognizing its excellence in interface, interaction, and user experience design, Catch Tracking was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2022. This prestigious accolade is given to well-designed and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Catch Tracking's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world make it a deserving recipient of this honor.
