Deskable: A Multifunctional Desk for Single-Person Households

A desk and dining table in one

Most single-person households face the challenge of limited space, often resorting to eating at a floor table or a desk. With the rise of remote work and the need for contactless solutions, the desk has become cluttered. Introducing Deskable, a unique piece of furniture that combines the functionality of a desk and a dining table, designed by Jeongmin Ryu and Taekeun Oh.

Deskable is a desk specifically designed for single-person households. By combining two essential pieces of furniture into one, it offers more than just a workspace. The innovative design not only saves space but also provides a convenient solution for dining in small living spaces.

The key feature of Deskable is its ability to transform into a dining table. Users can simply pull out the drawer in front of the desk and extend the top plate, instantly creating a spacious dining area. This eliminates the need for a separate dining table, making it ideal for those living in compact studio apartments.

One of the challenges in designing Deskable was ensuring the stability and safety of the extended top plate. To prevent accidents and utensils from falling between the gaps, the designers incorporated a carved line on the top of the drawer. This line serves as a visual boundary, preventing users from excessively opening the drawer and eliminating the need for additional stoppers.

The materials used in the construction of Deskable include oak plywood, ABS plastic with a metallic coating, tempered glass, and stainless steel. These materials not only contribute to the durability and functionality of the desk but also add a touch of elegance to its design.

Deskable's dimensions are W1200 mm x D600 mm x H770 mm, making it suitable for various living spaces. Its sleek and minimalist design seamlessly blends with any interior style, adding a touch of sophistication to the room.

The Deskable project began in Korea in March 2021 and was completed in November 2021. The designers, Jeongmin Ryu and Taekeun Oh, dedicated their efforts to creating a practical and innovative solution for single-person households.

Recognizing its exceptional design and functionality, Deskable was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is given to creations that meet professional and industrial requirements while integrating best practices and technical characteristics. Deskable's multifunctionality and contribution to a better living experience make it a deserving recipient of this accolade.

Deskable is not just a desk; it is a versatile piece of furniture that caters to the needs of single-person households. By combining the functionality of a desk and a dining table, it offers convenience, space-saving solutions, and a touch of elegance to any living space.
