Dictionary of Grasses

A Unique Book Design by Takako Masuki

When Nature Inspires Design

The "Dictionary of Grasses" is a captivating book design created by the talented designer Takako Masuki. Inspired by the enchanting scenes of the Ghibli movie "Totoro," Masuki designed the cover to resemble a tunnel of trees, with grasses surrounding the title. This unique design element sets the tone for the entire book, which introduces readers to the world of grasses and weeds.

What sets this book apart is its use of tracing paper for the outside cover. The tracing paper features delicate grass illustrations, creating a translucent effect that adds depth and visual interest. The inside cover also showcases grass illustrations, further immersing readers in the natural world.

The "Dictionary of Grasses" is not just visually stunning; it is also thoughtfully designed. The book alternates between four-color and two-color pages, with line drawings on the two-color pages providing a visual break for the eyes. This careful consideration of color and layout enhances the reading experience and makes the book a true work of art.

Measuring at 116mm x 23mm x 160mm, this compact book is the perfect size to carry with you and explore the world of grasses wherever you go. It is a testament to the beauty and diversity of nature, showcasing the intricate details of various grasses and weeds.

The "Dictionary of Grasses" was a collaborative effort, with the publisher Richo publishing, author Oto Morino, illustrator Mieko Sasaki, editor Kumiko Morita, and printing company Sinano co., ltd. all contributing to its creation. Takako Masuki, of Masuki Design, brought their vision to life with her exceptional design skills.

Not only is the "Dictionary of Grasses" a visually stunning book, but it also serves as a marketing tool. The translucent cover design catches people's attention and entices them to explore the contents within. It is no wonder that this book has become one of the bestsellers for Raicho publishing.

The project to create the "Dictionary of Grasses" began in September 2016 and was completed in January 2017. Throughout the design process, the team conducted extensive research on flowers and grasses, focusing on those found in the local neighborhood. The colors used in the design were inspired by the natural hues of flowers and grasses, with a particular emphasis on a bluish-green shade for the grasses.

Creating a book with alternating two-color and four-color pages presented a challenge for the design team. However, their dedication and expertise allowed them to overcome this obstacle and create a visually stunning and cohesive final product.

The "Dictionary of Grasses" has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category in 2022. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

With its unique design, meticulous attention to detail, and celebration of nature's beauty, the "Dictionary of Grasses" is a must-have for anyone interested in art, design, and the natural world.
