Iron Ore Center: A Unique Blend of History and Innovation

Designer Saiwen Liu Transforms Old Workshop into a Modern Control Center and Future Museum

Renowned designer Saiwen Liu has breathed new life into an old workshop, transforming it into the Iron Ore Center, a state-of-the-art control center with a nod to the past. This unique project, which combines functionality with history, has earned Liu the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022.

The Iron Ore Center, located in Tieshan District, Huangshi City, Hubei Province, China, is a testament to the designer's innovative approach and respect for history. Drawing inspiration from the form of underground iron ore spaces, Liu has created an interior space that is both modern and reminiscent of the past. The unique gray color of underground ironstone was chosen to further enhance the connection to the site's history.

What sets this project apart is its dual functionality. While it currently serves as a central control operation for the enterprise, it has also been designed to function as a small-scale museum in the future, thus preserving the long history of iron ore exploitation in Daye, which spans over 1700 years. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the investment in the central control hall will not go to waste once the remaining mine resources are depleted in less than 10 years.

The project, which began in December 2020 and was completed in May 2021, covers an area of 2373 square meters. Liu faced several challenges during the design process, including the high storey height of the original building and the need to balance the functional needs of the control center with the future requirements of a museum. However, through innovative solutions such as adding a transition layer to reduce the top surface of the hall to 7 meters, these challenges were successfully overcome.

The Iron Ore Center is a shining example of how old buildings can be repurposed to meet current needs, a pressing issue in China where land resources are gradually being reduced. By preserving and reinforcing the original building, Liu has avoided the waste that comes with demolition and construction, while also creating a space that is insulated due to its high temperature location.

In conclusion, the Iron Ore Center is a unique blend of history and innovation, a project that not only meets the current needs of the enterprise but also preserves its long history for future generations. It is a testament to Saiwen Liu's innovative approach and commitment to sustainability, qualities that have earned him the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022.
