Discussing Time: A Collective Book Design Project by Zona Yuechen Guan

Exploring the Passage of Time through Sculptural Typography

Discussing Time is a collective book design project for typographic sculptures with the letter "time." Designed by Zona Yuechen Guan, this innovative project brings together a group of individuals to contemplate and discuss the concept of time while creating sculptures based on their unique expressions. Inspired by the natural phenomenon of ice melting into water, Guan aims to make audiences experience the passage of time through her sculptures. The resulting book design combines 16th-century book design elements with modern techniques, creating a visual representation of the concept of time.

The project began in February 2020 in New York and concluded in April 2020, earning the prestigious silver award of Graphis New Talent 2021. Guan's extensive research on book printing and design analysis, along with discussions with a team of thirteen individuals, including instructors, contributed to the development of this thought-provoking project. The designer's exploration of books from the 16th century onwards, combined with an analysis of typography, fonts, and design preferences of that era, informed the creation of a collective book that spans time.

The unique aspect of this project lies in the interdisciplinary nature of Guan's role. She played various roles, including the sculpture's artist, concept creator, photographer, videographer, facilitator of discussions, transcriber of conversations, editor of recorded texts, designer, and bookbinder. This multifaceted approach allowed for a comprehensive exploration of the concept of time and its representation through typography and sculpture.

The sculptures themselves are made using ice as the primary material. Guan creates molds and fills them with water, freezing them to form intricate ice sculptures. The book, designed in a size of 7x12 inches, features photographs of these sculptures, capturing the ephemeral nature of ice melting into water and symbolizing the passage of time.

By referencing parchment design from the early 16th century, Guan combines ancient design elements with modern technology, resulting in a book that embodies the concept of "crossing time." The typography and layout of the book are carefully crafted to enhance the visual impact and convey the essence of the discussions on time and sculpture-making.

Discussing Time challenges the audience to contemplate their own understanding of time and its fleeting nature. Through the collective efforts of the participants and Guan's artistic vision, the book serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and the exploration of complex concepts through design.

As the recipient of the Bronze A' Design Award in Print and Published Media Design in 2022, Discussing Time has been recognized for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity. This accolade celebrates designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in the quality of life and making the world a better place.

Discussing Time is a captivating exploration of the passage of time, brought to life through the fusion of sculpture, typography, and collective discussions. Zona Yuechen Guan's visionary approach and meticulous attention to detail have resulted in a truly unique and thought-provoking book design.
