Anchor and Sail: A Unique Residential House Incorporating Ocean Motifs

A Distinctive Blend of Elegance and Oceanic Inspiration

In Kaohsiung, a city with a beach, Anchor & Sail stands out as the only residence that seamlessly incorporates ocean motifs into its space. Designed by Jerry Hsu and realized by HHNL Architecture & Interior Design, this residential house is a testament to the fusion of prominence, elegance, and the symbolic vocabulary of an ocean cruise ship. With a focus on socializing and leisure, Anchor & Sail offers a promising future filled with diversity, variety, and fun in daily living.

What sets Anchor & Sail apart is its ingenious approach to spatial design. By "stealing" some space from the common area, the three bedrooms have been enlarged to create spacious closets, eliminating the spatial limitations typically found in residential houses. Additionally, the living-dining room features gentle curves that cover and decorate protrusions, creating a distinctively gentle feel. The balance between additions and subtractions is perfectly achieved, resulting in a harmonious and functional living space.

The bedrooms in Anchor & Sail are meticulously planned to provide a highly comfortable lounging environment. The master bedroom, although receiving natural light from only one side, utilizes a glass divider for the bathroom, creating an open plan that enhances the ocean theme and allows natural light to flow into the walk-in closet. Soft curves adorn the walls and ceiling, evoking the rhythm of flowing ocean waves. The two secondary bedrooms on the left exude simplicity and relaxation with their neat lines and colors. Each room is equipped with a separate bathroom, ensuring functionality and privacy.

The open space connecting the living room and dining room serves multiple functions, including a home cinema, a dining section, a fireplace area, and a wine-tasting section. This versatile area allows for various activities and gatherings, providing adaptability for different occasions. The carefully selected Edra-On The Rocks sofas from Italy evoke the image of a bay where sailors gather, adding to the overall oceanic ambiance of the space.

Anchor & Sail is located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and was completed in July 2020. The design incorporates meticulous research, with elements such as a yacht-like bar in the wine-tasting section and a billowing sail-shaped ceiling in the common area. The beam in the middle, adorned with baking varnish, resembles a grand mast on a ship, while a cloud-like chandelier hangs above the dining table, perfectly complementing the sail-inspired design. The overall atmosphere is vibrant and lively, reminiscent of the sea breeze and the salty smell of the ocean.

This exceptional design has been recognized for its creativity and ingenuity. Anchor & Sail was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and resourcefulness, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
