Sinafu Stand: Elevating the Art of Serving

Combining Tradition and Innovation in Japanese Lacquerware

Sinafu Stand was designed by Kenichiro Oomori, a renowned Japanese designer, to revolutionize the way food is served. Inspired by the traditional Japanese method of using height in food presentation, Oomori aimed to create a beautiful and smart solution that would enhance the dining experience.

Located in Yamanaka Prefecture, known for its rich history in lacquerware craftsmanship, Sinafu Stand showcases the best characteristics of Yamanaka lacquerware. The raised bowls in the Sinafu line appear to float in midair, thanks to their expertly turned, thin wooden stems. The ergonomic and delightful-to-touch curved outer surface adds to the overall aesthetic appeal.

The production process involves the use of a woodworking wheel and wiping lacquer technique. The main material used is Zelkova, a type of wood that is known for its durability and beauty. The Sinafu Stand comes in three different sizes: dessert bowl, middle compote dish, and large compote dish, each with its own unique dimensions.

What sets Sinafu Stand apart is the combination of traditional craftsmanship and innovative design. Yamanaka is renowned for its skilled wood-turners who have developed techniques unique to the region. These techniques include Tatekidori, which uses wood cut across the grain for a perfect fit, Usubiki, which creates incredibly thin wood, and Sensuji, a decorative wood turning technique.

The project started in July 2017 and was completed in February 2018 in Yamanaka. The Sinafu series, which includes Sinafu Stand, was first introduced in June 2011. The series is based on the concept of Japanese hospitality and aims to create an elegant and rich dining experience.

Despite the challenges posed by the use of wood as a material, Oomori and his team overcame them by combining different materials for the plate and stem/foot plate. This ensured stability and minimized the risk of deformation or breakage. The result is a delicate and visually stunning design that is both functional and durable.

Sinafu Stand has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2022. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to the improvement of quality of life.
