Azumaen: A Japanese Restaurant Inspired by Migratory Birds

Design by Go Fujita

Azumaen is a unique Japanese restaurant located on the shore of a lake in Nagasaki, Japan. Designed by Go Fujita, this restaurant draws inspiration from the migratory birds that visit the lake every season, creating a serene and captivating atmosphere.

The design of Azumaen is centered around the concept of a bird resting its wings on a stage that juts out into the lake. The private booths in the restaurant are shaped like mandarin ducks, evoking the image of birds quietly resting their wings in a pond. The use of indirect lighting further enhances this feeling, creating a floating sensation reminiscent of mandarin ducks floating in a pond.

The booths in Azumaen are made of bent structural plywood and finished with a glossy cloth that reflects natural light, adding to the overall elegance of the space. The lighting plan of the restaurant is carefully designed with timers, allowing the atmosphere to change from day to night, enhancing the dining experience for guests.

One of the notable challenges faced during the design process was the restrictions imposed by the location of the restaurant in a national park. The materials and colors had to be carefully chosen to comply with the park's regulations. Additionally, creating the circular booths with changing heights proved to be technically demanding. However, these challenges were overcome, resulting in a stunning and unique dining space.

Azumaen spans an impressive 2700 square meters and is a testament to the fusion of art, architecture, and design. It has been recognized for its excellence and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that showcase ingenuity, technical skill, and contribute to improving the quality of life.

Azumaen is not just a restaurant; it is a harmonious blend of nature, design, and culinary delights. With its captivating ambiance and exquisite design, it offers guests a truly unforgettable dining experience.
