Wangchun: A Design of Tranquility and Purity

Meeting in design

Located in a park, the church has a river in its south flowing quietly with abundant trees by side. At the beginning, the designer is looking for characters of the church through architectural and natural space, and feels architectural languages God wants to give her. A church is sacred and quiet in which the soul can rest in peace and lost people can find hope again. Therefore, the design of church must be pious as well.

This design starts from the characteristics of the project and the surrounding environment, and takes purity and tranquility as the core of the space atmosphere. Designers use simple materials and natural light to present the spirit of the place. The decoration of the project is very simple. The design makes people feel solemn in the space by symmetrical structure and changing light.

Suping Zhuo, the designer behind Wangchun, sought to capture the essence of a sacred and peaceful space. Inspired by the verse from Psalms 1:3, which likens a person to a tree planted by streams of water, Zhuo aimed to create a church that would prosper and provide solace to its visitors.

The unique properties of Wangchun lie in its ability to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Nestled in a park, the church is surrounded by a serene river and lush trees. The design draws inspiration from the architectural and natural elements of the site, resulting in a space that exudes sanctity and tranquility.

The realization of Wangchun involved the use of materials such as wood veneer, wood silk board, latex paint, stainless steel, and stone. These materials were carefully selected to enhance the purity and piety of the design, while also ensuring durability and longevity.

With a project area of 620 square meters, Wangchun offers a spacious and serene environment for worship and reflection. The design process involved meticulous planning and detailed space design schemes, which were then confirmed by the owner. Construction drawings and a list of building materials and furniture were prepared before the project was completed.

Completed in December 2019, Wangchun stands as a testament to the designer's dedication to creating a sacred space that fosters peace and hope. The project address is No. 687, Xijiao Road, Haishu District, Ningbo.

Suping Zhuo's research for Wangchun focused on understanding the essence of a church and its role in providing solace to individuals. The designer aimed to express the sacred feeling of a church through architectural and natural space, using essential materials and natural brilliance to convey the spirit of the place.

Throughout the design process, Zhuo faced challenges in capturing the unique characteristics of the church and expressing its sacredness. However, through careful consideration of architectural and natural elements, as well as the use of symmetrical structures and changing light, these challenges were overcome.

Wangchun has been recognized for its exceptional design, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2021 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to professional and industrial requirements. Wangchun's design embodies these qualities, contributing to a better world through its fulfillment and positive atmosphere.
