Luna: A Cafe and Classroom Inspired by Hayao Miyazaki

Unleashing the Magic of Japanese Design

The design of Luna, a cafe and classroom located in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, draws inspiration from the enchanting worlds created by Japanese comic master Hayao Miyazaki. With its unique blend of Japanese aesthetics and romantic elements, Luna offers visitors a whimsical and immersive experience.

Designed by Kun-Han Yang, Luna stands out with its distinctive features and innovative use of materials. The first floor, dedicated to preserving the original building's charm, exudes a Japanese ambiance through the extensive use of wood grain elements, Japanese rock gardens, and grilles that create a Zen atmosphere. The cafe bar cabinet, crafted from terrazzo and concrete, adds a touch of timelessness to the space.

The second floor, with its vintage charm, showcases the innovative transformation of materials from the 1970s. This floor pays homage to the local business district's spirit of innovation, seamlessly blending the old and the new. On the other hand, the third floor takes a departure from the Zen atmosphere of the lower levels and embraces a modern Japanese design aesthetic.

Materials such as Taiwan cedar, stone, stainless steel, glass, red bricks, hollow bricks, and plants were carefully selected to bring the design to life. The third floor, in particular, has been transformed into an internationally certified coffee classroom, featuring minimalist elements and lines that divide the space. Stainless steel cabinets enhance the professional image, while glass installations reflect the modern Japanese style and the nearby Tiger Mountain Shrine.

Spanning three floors and covering a total area of 121 square meters, Luna offers a versatile and comfortable space for visitors. The first floor serves as a coffee bar and gallery, while the second floor provides ample seating. The third floor, with its moon and raft-like platform, creates an environment of adventure and exploration, resonating with the historical patterns of the surrounding area.

Overcoming the challenges of expressing abstract concepts in design, the Luna project successfully captures the essence of Japanese elements on each floor. The design team skillfully connects the different styles of each level, creating a seamless flow and a sense of time passing. Luna's design has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023.

Step into Luna and be transported to a world where the magic of Hayao Miyazaki's stories and the elegance of Japanese design come together. Indulge in a cup of coffee, immerse yourself in the whimsical atmosphere, and let Luna take you on a captivating journey.
