Ceramic Art Hotel in Jingdezhen: A Modern Expression of Traditional Craftsmanship

Recycled Ceramic Materials Transformed into Aesthetic Works of Art

The Xi Jian Tang hotel in Jingdezhen, China, showcases the beauty and versatility of ceramic art in a modern setting. Designed by Jianfeng Yu and Chao Yang, this unique hotel is a testament to sustainable design and the rich cultural heritage of Jingdezhen, known as China's Ceramic City.

The inspiration for the hotel design came from the abundant clay and waste ceramic materials of Jingdezhen ceramics. Jianfeng Yu and Chao Yang reimagined these discarded materials, transforming them into stunning works of art. By rearranging and repurposing ceramic scraps, they created a hotel that seamlessly integrates modern ceramic art throughout its corridors, sitting rooms, and dining areas.

One of the standout features of the Xi Jian Tang hotel is its extensive use of recycled ceramic materials as decoration. The walls are adorned with ceramic bricks, showcasing the beauty and versatility of this traditional craft. These materials were sourced from local ceramic factories, giving them a new lease of life as decorative elements in the hotel.

Spanning an area of 3000 square meters, the Xi Jian Tang hotel offers guests a unique experience immersed in the local ceramic art scene. Every corner of the hotel displays modern ceramic art pieces, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship that Jingdezhen is renowned for.

Operating as both a hotel and an art gallery, the Xi Jian Tang hotel provides a platform for local ceramic artists to showcase their work. Guests can enjoy the beautiful ceramic art while being surrounded by the rich history and culture of Jingdezhen.

Creating a modern hotel design using irregular and messy waste ceramic materials presented a significant challenge for the designers. However, Jianfeng Yu and Chao Yang successfully overcame these obstacles, turning the materials into aesthetically pleasing works of art that enhance the overall ambiance of the hotel.

The Xi Jian Tang hotel project began in April 2018 and was completed in August 2018, all within the city of Jingdezhen. It serves as a testament to the designers' commitment to sustainable design and their passion for preserving and promoting local art and culture.

Recognized for its outstanding design, the Xi Jian Tang hotel was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2021. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the hotel's well-designed, practical, and innovative approach, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world, fulfilling guests' desires and evoking positive emotions.

The Xi Jian Tang hotel in Jingdezhen is a true masterpiece that seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with modern design. It stands as a testament to the power of recycling and the enduring beauty of ceramic art, offering guests a unique and immersive experience in the heart of China's Ceramic City.
