Step: Revolutionizing Indoor Golf with Innovative Design

He-Yun Lu's Fresh Approach to Indoor Golf Centers in Taiwan

Discover the transformation of indoor golf into a vibrant, all-ages sport through He-Yun Lu's award-winning design project, Step.

Indoor golf has taken a swing towards inclusivity and style in Taiwan, thanks to He-Yun Lu's latest design project, Step. This expansive center isn't just a place to play; it's a showcase for golf equipment, a greenhouse-like oasis, and a social hub rolled into one. With its cafe-like ambiance and zones tailored for various age groups, Step challenges the traditional perception of golf as an exclusive pastime, inviting a new demographic to the greens.

The design's unique properties lie in its strategic zoning and material use. Lu employs different flooring materials to visually guide visitors through the space, creating distinct areas that cater to diverse needs. This approach not only enhances the user experience but also subtly directs traffic, ensuring that each swing, putt, and drive occurs without interference.

Step's cafe-like atmosphere is a deliberate choice to democratize the sport of golf. Moving away from the stereotype of golf as a luxury activity, the space adopts a palette of white, green, and wood grain, complemented by warm lighting. This design choice not only makes the sport more approachable but also fosters a welcoming environment akin to a cozy cafe.

The realization of Step's design involved a careful selection of materials, including eco-friendly options and innovative use of kiln-altered crossroad tiles. These tiles, known for their unique color variations and natural appearance, have become a favorite in the interior design industry. Alongside iron parts, artificial turf, and LED lighting, these materials contribute to the project's sustainable and aesthetic appeal.

Technical specifications were a crucial consideration for Lu, as the project involved renovating a former restaurant space with complex ductwork. The meticulous planning of the space, from the front counter to the private and VIP rooms, was tailored to the owner's vision and the functional requirements of an indoor golf facility.

Step's design not only caters to the aesthetic and functional needs of golf enthusiasts but also enhances the playing experience. Bright colors replace the traditional dark hues of indoor ranges, reducing the sense of oppression and inviting a broader audience to enjoy the sport. This strategic choice aligns with the owner's ambition to popularize golf and make it accessible to all.

Completed in July 2023, Step stands as a testament to He-Yun Lu's innovative approach to design and his ability to overcome the challenges of adapting a non-traditional space for golf. The project's success is further underscored by its recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award category for 2024, celebrating its practicality, innovation, and contribution to a better world through design.
