The 5xSao Paulo loft is a 130 square meter space divided into five distinct areas: a kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom, and bathroom. The ceiling height varies between 3.5 to 5 meters, adding to the loft's spacious feel. The design's unique properties lie in its industrial aesthetic, with darker colors highlighted by natural light during the day and a more intimate, gallery-like atmosphere at night.
What sets this design apart is its ecological consciousness. The sofa fabric is made from recycled material, all the wood used is reforested, and the lighting is LED. The wall covering uses a new technique of applying a thin layer of colored cement, and the floor features a new porcelain design that mimics typical Brazilian wood. Pippi also incorporated unique pieces designed by well-known Brazilian designers, further emphasizing the project's commitment to local artistry.
The 5xSao Paulo loft was created for the Casa Cor Santa Catarina, an event that took place in May 2015 and attracted 20,000 visitors from all over Brazil. Visitors were encouraged to interact with the space, opening drawers, touching furniture, and getting a feel for the design. A trained receptionist was on hand to answer questions and explain the project's details.
The design process involved a six-month survey of interviews with Sao Paulo residents, both natives and those who moved to the city for job opportunities. Pippi used their stories and urban routines to inform the design, translating what Sao Paulo means to Brazil into the loft's aesthetic. The project's greatest challenge was harmonizing the light, clean design idea with the brutal, urban decor that Sao Paulo offers. Despite this, the project was completed on time with the help of around 50 people.
In conclusion, the 5xSao Paulo loft is a testament to Juliana Pippi's innovative design approach and commitment to sustainability. The project not only reflects the urban lifestyle of Sao Paulo but also showcases the city's unique architectural style. It serves as a reminder of the power of design to capture and reflect a city's spirit, making it a deserving recipient of the Golden A' Design Award.
