Family Bliss: A Harmonious Intergenerational Home

Creating a Space for Three Generations to Thrive

The project, aptly named Family Bliss, is a testament to the concept of intergenerational cohabitation. Designed by Yueh-Ching Cho, this residential space in Yuanlin, Taiwan, offers a harmonious and exclusive family life for three generations under one roof.

The inspiration behind Family Bliss stems from the desire to extend the harmonious family bliss of three generations together. The space is dominated by warm wood tones, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The detailing features a stacked design, creating layers and smooth lines that add depth and visual interest to the space. Through the strategically placed windows on the first floor, the lushness of the aged trees in the courtyard is reflected indoors, creating a varied and enchanting sensory experience.

What sets Family Bliss apart is its emphasis on hospitality, good lighting, and an expansive field of view. The design incorporates penetrating visual effects that seamlessly blend the outdoors with the indoors. This alignment with the variations in light and shadow creates a sense of openness and vibrancy. The interior's elaborate white space, seemingly built up with the flow of time, exudes a strong taste of life and activates the residents' desire to explore and get close to nature.

The realization of Family Bliss involved the use of various materials, including metal parts, natural stone, and solid wood. The main wall of the living room TV showcases the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. The L-shaped sofa set, extending towards the L-shaped window behind the living room, offers a new home-living experience with its smooth and open lines. The design also incorporates hidden and abundant storage functions and effectively introduces outdoor greenery into the space.

Spanning a total of 415 square meters, Family Bliss provides ample space for the multi-generational family to thrive. The project, completed in April 2022 in Changhua, Taiwan, showcases the designer's meticulous research and attention to detail. From nature to man-made materials, the compelling purpose of space is shaped. The use of color, texture, and pattern of natural materials, along with the interplay of light and shadow, creates a moving landscape art that evokes emotions and arouses a deep appreciation for the aesthetics of life.

Transforming an old farmhouse into a modern living space presented its own set of challenges. The building, over 20 years old, required extensive renovation and foundation works. The interior was almost completely demolished to strengthen the foundation and replace outdated water pipes. However, these challenges were overcome to epitomize the blending of the building with nature and the juxtaposition of light and scenery. The space carries the flow of the seasons, forming a compelling context that enriches the emotion of the space while retaining its original charm.

Family Bliss is not only a beautiful and functional living space but also an environmentally conscious one. The residence is renovated with low formaldehyde paint and materials that meet green building label standards, ensuring the well-being of its occupants and the environment.

Family Bliss has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

Family Bliss is a testament to the power of design to create a harmonious and exclusive family life. With its thoughtful layout, attention to detail, and integration of nature, this residential space sets the stage for generations to come together and thrive.
