Rivalta: A Tribute to Heritage and Excellence in Wine Packaging

Ximena Ureta's Award-Winning Design Celebrates the Legacy of Vina Santa Ema

In the world of wine, the packaging is as important as the product itself. It is a visual narrative that tells the story of the wine, its origin, and its creators. This article explores the award-winning design of Rivalta, a wine packaging created by Ximena Ureta, which pays tribute to the legacy of Vina Santa Ema and its founder, Pedro Pavone-Voglino.

Originating from the highest vineyards in the Maipo Valley, Rivalta is an elegant brand with a deep sense of origin. The wine comes from Cerro Blanco, a location known for its extraordinary characteristics for viticulture. This location, with an altitude of 1,000 meters on the Andes, allows for the production of very expressive wines with a deep color, great body, acidity, and aromas. Rivalta is a limited production blend, made every year using the best 20 barrels of the winery's red strains.

The design of Rivalta is a tribute to Pedro Pavone-Voglino, the father of Félix Pavone, the founder of Vina Santa Ema. In 1917, Pedro embarked on a long journey from his home in Rivalta, Piedmont, Italy, to the New World. Upon arriving in Chile, he settled in Isla de Maipo, where the landscape and its extraordinary characteristics for viticulture charmed him at once. The design of Rivalta encapsulates this pioneering spirit and determination.

The front label of Rivalta was printed on Fasson Estate 8,89gr and the back label on white Martele, 90gr. The label was printed using offset technology, and both its printing and finishes were carried out on a Gallus machine with 5 special colors and Alufin Matt Gio-NB matt silver overprintable folia, silkscreen varnish, and mechanical relief. The back label was made using digital technology on a Xeikon CX3 series machine printed in 3 special colors.

The Rivalta front and back labels were printed on self-adhesive, uncoated, and water-resistant Wet Strength paper. It is FSC-certified, confirming the commitment to the use of raw materials grown in forests cultivated under responsible management, thus providing environmental, social, and economic benefits. The labels are resistant to aging and ultraviolet light. The Bordeaux label dimension is 4.7cm x 16.7 cm, and the back label dimension is 11.7cm x 8.4cm. The tin capsule is printed in two colors.

The design of the Rivalta Gift Box was the result of several previous technical tests during the trial period so as to enhance the design and establish the percentage of folia, red and silver ink of the illustration. Five different printing originals were elaborated until reaching the desired result. The challenge of this packaging consisted of designing the Rivalta label so that it would maintain some of its initial characteristics but at the same time managed to revitalize the passionate and adventurous spirit of the pioneer generations, focusing on the place of origin of the Pavone family. Red now plays an important role in Rivalta's new personality, making it more elegant and sophisticated.

This design was awarded Silver in A' Packaging Design Award in 2023. The Silver A' Design Award is rewarded to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
