Corridor: A Fusion of Art and Dining

Ke-Hsuan Yang's Innovative Restaurant Design Wins Silver A' Design Award

Located in Luodong, Taiwan, 'Corridor' is a commercial space that offers light meals and freshly brewed beer. The owner expanded the business to provide an alternative to the Luodong night market for travelers. The restaurant is divided into two distinct spaces: a bar for evening drinks and conversations, and a family-friendly restaurant for gatherings. The designers cleverly used spatial characteristics and design elements to merge these two different spaces, transforming the original dark space into a wall for displaying artwork.

The restaurant is a renovation of a three-story building on a traditional old street. The first floor serves as the commercial space, while the upper floors are residences. The designers injected the concept of a sloping roof into the glass house converted from a deserted backyard, creating a space close to nature, greenery, and sunlight. The flooring is made of groundwork and wooden flooring, while the roof is made of white insulation tin roof, with the overall tone based on earth colors.

The project was completed in June 2019. The designers faced several challenges during the renovation, including the rainy weather in Luodong, Yilan, and the tight schedule. They overcame these challenges by dealing with the flooring first and covering the roof with a waterproof canvas to prevent rainwater from seeping in. The floor was re-piled, cemented, and ditched to channel the water out, keeping the floor dry.

The 'Corridor' attracts a diverse clientele. The wine glass symbol on the architectural concrete signifies that this is a place where people can enjoy a drink. The passionate red color of the wine glass logo attracts visitors from afar. The multi-layered lighting fixtures, black ironwork, and grey painted ceiling create a bar area with a vintage and rough industrial style.

The 'Corridor' was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2023, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that exhibit outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
