Sounds of Welser

An Interactive Steel Organ Installation by Responsive Spaces

Welser Profile, a global provider of steel profiles, sought an interactive brand experience for its visitor center. Responsive Spaces answered the call with "Sounds of Welser," an innovative installation that combines tradition, technology, and soundscapes.

The "Sounds of Welser" installation is a unique and captivating interactive experience that allows visitors to explore the world of steel profiles through touch and sound. Designed by Responsive Spaces, this interactive steel organ installation showcases the history and success of Welser Profile in a truly immersive way.

What sets this installation apart is its ability to blend tradition and innovation seamlessly. The design resembles a traditional organ, but it is far more than meets the eye. With sophisticated capacitive sensors and a dynamic sound engine, the installation responds to every touch, creating mystical soundscapes that change every other minute.

One of the remarkable features of "Sounds of Welser" is the hidden technology. The capacitive sensors, carefully integrated into each steel profile, allow for precise and intuitive interaction with the product. Visitors can explore the tactile and sonic experience of interacting with the steel profiles without any distractions.

The installation's technology is complemented by its meticulous craftsmanship. The steel profiles used in the organ are real Welser Profile products, emphasizing the company's commitment to quality and authenticity. The profiles are electrically conductive but insulated by a wooden base, ensuring safe and distinguishable interaction.

Measuring 4000mm in width, with a maximum depth of 1000mm and height of 3400mm, "Sounds of Welser" is an impressive and visually striking installation that demands attention. Its presence in the Welser Profile visitor center adds a touch of artistry and innovation to the space.

Visitors to the installation can expect a truly interactive experience. By touching the steel profiles, they can create their own unique sounds and explore the endless possibilities of the dynamic sound engine. The constantly changing soundscape ensures that each visit to "Sounds of Welser" is a new and exciting experience.

"Sounds of Welser" was brought to life through a combination of advanced production technology and careful material selection. The installation houses a PC, two speakers, and a microcontroller, all hidden from view. The capacitive sensors, triggered by touch, change the resistance of each steel profile, resulting in nine tones and two different octaves on each side.

This permanent interactive installation was launched in September 2021 at the Welser Profile headquarters in Gresten, Lower Austria. It serves as a testament to Welser Profile's commitment to innovation and offers visitors a unique and engaging way to connect with the brand.

The creation of "Sounds of Welser" was not without its challenges. Applying an alloy coating to the steel profiles presented a hurdle, as it affected their electrical conductivity. Extensive testing and experimentation led to the discovery of the optimal alloy solution. Additionally, calibrating the sensors across all 18 profiles required meticulous attention to detail and rigorous testing under various conditions.

The "Sounds of Welser" installation has garnered recognition for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interactive, Experiential, and Design Installations category in 2023. This prestigious award celebrates designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

"Sounds of Welser" is a testament to the power of design and innovation in creating immersive and engaging experiences. It showcases the rich history and success of Welser Profile while inviting visitors to explore the world of steel profiles through touch and sound. This interactive installation is a must-see for anyone seeking a unique and captivating experience.
