Modern Courtyard

Residential Design by Tai Kuan Huang

The design of public area integrated with concept of three entry courtyard of Chinese traditional buildings, which satisfied the daily life needs of the building through the interior space, bringing in the sense of space dimension and ritual of home.

The Modern Courtyard, designed by Tai Kuan Huang, is a unique residential project that combines modern aesthetics with traditional Chinese architectural elements. The design revolves around the concept of three entry courtyards, which not only fulfill the functional requirements of the space but also create a sense of spatial dimension and a feeling of home.

One of the standout features of this design is the careful planning of the 1423 square feet space. The layout was reimagined to create four distinct areas - a spacious living room, a dining room, and two circular flows that connect the entryway to the kitchen, master bedroom, and guest bedrooms. These areas were divided based on everyday living requisites, with the corridor serving as the axis and the height of the ceiling and terrace boundary defining the boundaries.

The design also incorporates innovative technology and materials. The first entry, from the front door to the entryway, establishes the first circular flow based on daily living needs. Moving from the entryway to the kitchen, you will find a spacious cooking area, which forms the second entry and the second circular flow. The third entry is located in the living room and dining room, creating a seamless connection between these spaces.

In terms of aesthetics, the Modern Courtyard embraces simplicity and lightness. The use of white oak and walnut wood creates a visual balance between light and heavy elements, while also adding warmth and a touch of nature to the space. The absence of a traditional standard ceiling in the living room and dining room allows for a more spacious and open atmosphere, with natural light streaming in through the height differences created by the ceilings.

This design challenges the conventional notion of a standard living room by leaving plenty of empty space for future flexibility. The integration of the three entry courtyard concept adds a sense of ritual and tradition to the modern living space, creating a unique and harmonious environment.

The Modern Courtyard project was completed in HsinChu, Taiwan, between March and June 2022. It showcases the designer's meticulous attention to detail and their ability to transform traditional architectural elements into a contemporary residential design.
