Jeffrey Zee's Night of City: A Futuristic Nightclub Experience

Blending Technology and Design for an Immersive Nightlife Concept

Inspired by astral traveling and alternate realities, Jeffrey Zee's "Night of City" is a revolutionary nightlife entertainment concept that seamlessly integrates physical and virtual dimensions. This award-winning design, located in the tech hub of China, Hangzhou, offers a unique, immersive experience that pushes the boundaries of traditional nightclub design.

Jeffrey Zee's design inspiration for Night of City (NOC) stemmed from concepts of astral traveling and alternate realities. The design manifests an immersive, multi-purpose nightlife entertainment concept that explores the integration and boundaries between physical and virtual dimensions. The use of organic forms and kinetic mechanical structures creates a spatial experience that is a process of metamorphosis, enhanced by customized lighting and visual animations choreographed to stimulate all senses.

What sets NOC apart from other nightclubs is its unique location in the city center of Hangzhou, known as the tech hub of China. The design combines various technologies, artistic expressions, and multi-disciplinary collaborations to create transcendental experiences within the 6,300-square-meter venue. The 46 avant-garde private rooms offer a blend of live DJ, karaoke, gaming, dining, and performances, all within the privacy and safety of individual rooms, a crucial design consideration in the post-pandemic era.

The realization of NOC involved a myriad of lighting and visual technologies, including kinetic lighting structures in steel, custom-made 3D curved LED panels, LED transparent screens, full spectrum programmable LED light strips, high-resolution projectors, and tailor-made visual art content for individual rooms. The main construction materials included GRG glass reinforced gypsum, metallic and textured paint, patterned marble flooring, metal mesh, perforated steel panels, custom ceramic tiles, backpainted tempered glass panels, and two-way mirrors.

The design and construction of NOC were not without challenges. The curvilinear design aesthetics presented various hurdles during the design and construction phases. Despite these, the project team, various consultants, and construction team collaborated seamlessly and completed the ambitious project. The design of NOC began in October 2020 in Shanghai, with construction in Hangzhou starting in April 2021, and the venue opened to the public in June 2022.

Jeffrey Zee's Night of City is not just a nightclub; it's a testament to the power of design and technology in creating immersive experiences. The design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023, a testament to its remarkable level of excellence and innovation. This futuristic, surreal, and immersive design is a beacon of what the future of nightlife entertainment could look like.
