Origami Science: A Reception Center Inspired by the Art of Folding

A Unique Blend of Architecture and Nostalgia

Located in Zhongshan District, Taipei City, Origami Science is a stunning architectural marvel that draws inspiration from the concept of folding paper. The design team observed the characteristics of white paper and skillfully stacked geometric spaces through folding lines, creating a visually captivating structure that stands out amidst the surrounding greenery.

The reception center comprises three buildings, each with its own unique function. The introduction area, sales area, and sample house area are staggered, emphasizing the lightness and elegance of white, reminiscent of delicately folded paper. Vintage Chinese paper-cut arts serve as a unifying element, linking the three spaces and adding a touch of nostalgia to the overall design.

The exterior of Origami Science is a true testament to the designer's ingenuity. Half-cut PVC pipes are used to mimic the appearance of folded paper, while the roof symbolizes draped paper, creating a sense of movement and fluidity. The interior of the reception center is meticulously crafted to reflect the characteristics of folded paper, with curved lines and ambient lighting creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

One of the design team's main goals was to maximize natural light and ventilation within the space. The largest light-transmitting facade faces the park, allowing sunlight, treetop views, and the beauty of the sky to permeate the interior. The middle part of the building features striped curtains that echo the lines of the walls and floors, adding a touch of elegance and functionality.

With a total space of 208 square meters, Origami Science is a testament to the designer's attention to detail. The materials used include semi-painted PVC pipes for the exterior walls, artificial terrazzo tiles for the interior flooring, and gold elements for the wood paneling, expanded mesh, glass, and paper-cut arts. The cabinets are made of flexible and tough honeycomb paper, showcasing the designer's commitment to both aesthetics and functionality.

Origami Science not only captivates with its unique design but also offers a truly immersive experience. The design team focused on lighting to reduce the use of fixtures, allowing natural light to flood the interior. The building's exterior, with its white and curved design elements, creates a bright and inviting atmosphere that extends from the inside out.

Recognized for its exceptional design, Origami Science was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2023. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that embody creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
