Wabi Sabi: Embracing Simplicity and Beauty

A Residential House Designed by Miles Tseng

Inspired by the Japanese aesthetics of wabi-sabi, the residence is back to its original simplicity and purity through primitive textures and pure color schemes. Applied on the wall by hand, finishes are created using a trowel to add a simple, recessed feel. The interweaving of roughness and delicacy creates a sense of unobtrusive beauty in the endless interplay of lights and shadows. A wabi-sabi abode comes to life.

In the world of design, finding beauty in imperfection is an art form. Miles Tseng, a renowned designer, has taken inspiration from the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi to create a residential house that embraces simplicity and natural beauty. With a focus on primitive textures and pure color schemes, this design stands out for its unique approach to creating a serene and harmonious living space.

One of the standout features of this design is its horizontal layout, which allows for an uninterrupted flow of natural light. The slightly raised flooring separates the living room and dining room, creating distinct yet connected spaces. The absence of solid walls allows abundant natural light to flood the residence, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Light trails dance across the textured surfaces, creating a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow that changes throughout the day.

The contrast of light and dark colors, rigid and soft textures, and cold and warm tones adds depth and visual interest to the residence. The use of grayscale paints, stucco tile flooring, and gray fabric sofas creates a cohesive and calming aesthetic. The bedrooms continue the stable tone of the communal space, with painted bedside walls and reflective black mirrors that enhance the visual depth.

Technological advancements play a crucial role in bringing this design to life. The use of storage system cabinets, artistic lacquer coatings, large tiles, soundproof and airtight windows, special glass, iron parts, super wear-resistant floors, custom-made furniture, and imported kitchen equipment ensures both functionality and durability.

Creating a living space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also eco-friendly was a priority for Miles Tseng. The design incorporates energy-saving features such as damp-proof and air-purifying paints, reducing the need for excessive electrical equipment. The balcony features sliding glass doors with louvers that filter abundant light, creating a softer glow. The use of eco-friendly materials and finishes contributes to a sustainable and pleasant living environment.

This exceptional design project was completed in January 2023 in Taichung City, Taiwan. It has garnered recognition and acclaim, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.

With its emphasis on simplicity, natural beauty, and eco-friendliness, the Wabi Sabi residential house designed by Miles Tseng is a testament to the power of design to create spaces that inspire and nurture the soul.
