Team Jizai Arms, a group of talented designers and researchers, has created a unique system that allows for the exchange of robotic limbs between wearers. The Jizai Arms system consists of a wearable base unit and detachable robotic arms, designed with a sophisticated blend of organic and complex shapes. This innovative design was realized using 3D printing technology, enabling the creation of lightweight yet robust components.
The system's unique properties lie in its potential for social interaction. The concept of exchanging arms, inspired by Kawabata's narrative, allows for a new level of interaction between digital cyborgs. This exploration of social dynamics in a cyborg society sets Jizai Arms apart from other human-machine integration technologies.
The technical specifications of the Jizai Arms system are impressive, with a width of 900mm, depth of 400mm, and height of 1000mm. The system includes a wearable base unit and detachable robotic limbs, with dimensions varying based on the layout and posture of the arms. The robotic arms, controlled by a computer, can be intuitively operated using a 1/2 scale model as a controller, allowing for precise and direct control.
The Jizai Arms project began in November 2021 as part of the JST INAMI JIZAI BODY PROJECT and was completed in September 2022. The system was first used and showcased in dance performances at the JIZAI Collection in Tokyo in November 2022. The project was a result of extensive research into human augmentation and embodied experiences between multiple digital cyborgs.
Despite the challenges faced during the design and production process, such as creating a connection system for easy attachment and detachment of the arms and achieving a visually appealing fusion of the human body and machine, Team Jizai Arms successfully realized their vision. Their efforts were recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Cybernetics, Prosthesis and Implant Design Award in 2023, a testament to their innovative and trendsetting creation.
