NIRO Pro: An Interactive Robot Redefining Companionship

Seamless Integration of Technology and Minimalism

When facing social dilemmas like aging, leftover children, and the surge of single-person youth in China, companionship is a common need for different groups of people. Designed by the HCI Exploration Lab - Baidu AIID, NIRO Pro aims to enhance the quality of life by building emotional connections with users.

NIRO Pro is an interactive robot that seamlessly integrates complex hardware and software with a minimalist appearance. Unlike traditional screen-operated robots, NIRO Pro utilizes computer vision and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies to engage in fluent conversations without the need for wake words. Its built-in micro laser projector can project up to 14 inches of high-definition images on any surface, allowing users to request and interact with various content through a Voice User Interface (VUI). This merging of virtual and reality creates a more immersive and enjoyable interaction experience.

One of the key features of NIRO Pro is its ability to establish eye contact with users, mimicking human communication. By employing camera and visual algorithms, NIRO Pro can detect the user's identity, intention, and status, enabling active and natural human-computer interaction without the need for wake words. The robot's rounded head and flexible LED eyes further enhance its lifelike appearance, while its three degrees of freedom in the head structure design allow it to mimic human head movements and body language during conversations.

Measuring at 175mm x 200mm x 298mm, NIRO Pro is compact yet powerful. Its compact size makes it suitable for various living spaces, while its advanced technology ensures seamless and intuitive operation.

NIRO Pro was launched in Beijing in April 2018 and completed in January 2019. Throughout the design process, the HCI Exploration Lab - Baidu AIID faced the challenge of creating a more natural human-robot interaction. Inspired by the communication process of eye contact, mouth movement, and sound localization in human interactions, the team successfully implemented camera and visual algorithms to enable the robot's abilities.

This innovative design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Cybernetics, Prosthesis, and Implant Design category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skills, and contributions to improving the quality of life. NIRO Pro's integration of technology and minimalism truly sets it apart, redefining the concept of companionship in the modern age.
