Located near the iconic Wawel Royal Castle, the Krakow Tenement aims to restore the original splendor and proportions of the historic building while incorporating contemporary design measures and modern technology. The restoration process involves the removal of a carelessly added top floor, allowing the tenement house to regain its authentic character from 1900. The original brick and historical decorations are meticulously preserved, adding to the building's charm and authenticity.
What sets the Krakow Tenement apart is its ability to adapt and transform depending on the observer's perspective. The design takes inspiration from the surrounding historical castle and its surroundings, resulting in a dynamic and variable style. From a distance, the building exudes a distinctly Gothic character, while up close, it reveals Renaissance arcades and soft forms of Baroque ornaments. This innovative approach creates a new, dynamic form that is defined by perception.
Technological advancements play a crucial role in the construction of the Krakow Tenement. The use of CLT (cross-laminated timber) glued timber construction ensures a durable and environmentally friendly structure. This modern construction technique minimizes the impact on the historical substance of the building while allowing for precise prefabricated elements to be produced in a controlled factory environment. The result is a structure that seamlessly integrates with the historical DNA of the place while embracing the potential of contemporary technology.
Inside the building, the design continues to impress. The front elevation creates contemporary chambers that offer some of the most attractive hotel rooms in Krakow. The location, view, and character of the interior, combined with the unique elegance of the designed structure, make these rooms truly exceptional. Wooden ceilings, reminiscent of historical Krakow interiors, flow smoothly from the facade into the hotel rooms, adding a touch of warmth and authenticity to the modern design.
The Krakow Tenement has garnered recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2023. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. The Krakow Tenement stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of innovation and tradition, creating a landmark that honors the past while embracing the future.
