Dua Tau Din Village: Recreating the Charm of an Old Village with Modern Architecture

Residential Building Design by Formosa Construction

The Dua Tau Din Village project in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, aims to recreate the nostalgic atmosphere of an old village while incorporating modern architecture and amenities. With its unique layout and design, this residential development offers a sense of community and nature in a high-density urban environment.

The inspiration for the Dua Tau Din Village design comes from the memories of the old village that once stood on the site. The project is located in a rezoning area that was previously farmland and a military base. As modern development rapidly erases the remnants of the old village and childhood neighborhood, this project seeks to preserve the sense of community and connection by recreating a space reminiscent of an old village.

What sets Dua Tau Din Village apart is its approach to residential design. Instead of constructing a single residential tower, the project recreates the dense and rough nature of an old neighborhood. The layout includes a pedestrian route that connects every courtyard, allowing residents to easily interact and fostering a sense of community. Each house is connected to its own yard, providing residents with privacy and a personal outdoor space. The 61 buildings in the village feature varying volumes and balconies, giving each building its own unique view and character.

The realization of the Dua Tau Din Village design incorporates various technologies and techniques. The building facades are made of handmade glaze red brick, which not only creates a tactile experience but also develops a beautiful patina over time. The use of CNC wood routers for concrete pouring reduces construction time, while 3D printing and physical construction layout ensure precise architectural diversification.

The specifications of Dua Tau Din Village include a total area of 4700 sqm, with 61 four-story buildings arranged in a U-shaped layout around an inner building. Each building has its own courtyard and parking garage, and all the courtyards are connected by a 200-meter community pedestrian route. The architecture features four types of reinforced concrete structures with staggered arrangements and brick facades, creating an overall village atmosphere.

With keywords like village, house, architecture, residential, brick, and Taiwan, the Dua Tau Din Village design captures the essence of a traditional village while embracing modernity. The design team behind this project includes Formosa Construction, HEJU Architect, and SoosoArch, who have collaborated to bring this vision to life.

The interaction within the Dua Tau Din Village design encourages residents to shape their own spaces and create a collage of stories. The project provides freedom for each resident to personalize their place, fostering a sense of individuality within the community. By incorporating nature and community into a high-density city, this design ensures that the memories of the area can continue to thrive.

The Dua Tau Din Village project is located near Hsinchu's old district, a former Air Force veteran village known for its strong community bonds. The old village was demolished to make way for a new high-density residential area, making this design an attempt to preserve the lost memories. The project is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 2025.

The challenges faced during the design process included the surrounding high-density buildings and traffic, as well as the microclimate challenges posed by the heat and noise of Taiwan. Additionally, the rezoning area lacked context, making it necessary to create a design that stimulates diversity and incorporates nature. The result is a combination of residential and park spaces that bring a unique character to the area.

The Dua Tau Din Village design is a testament to the importance of preserving local identity and fostering neighbor connections in the face of rapid urban development. By recreating the charm of an old village through modern architecture, this project offers a unique living experience that combines tradition, community, and nature.
