White Folded Lines: A Symphony of Light and Space

Yu-Fong Chang's Award-Winning Minimalist Residence Design

In the realm of interior design, Yu-Fong Chang's White Folded Lines stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of light, space, and minimalism. This residence design, awarded the Iron A' Design Award, showcases an innovative approach to creating a tranquil and bright living space.

At the heart of White Folded Lines lies the ingenious use of white as the primary hue to amplify the abundance of natural light within the high-floor apartment. The design's inspiration stems from the client's desire for a serene atmosphere, leading to the concept of folding surfaces to craft both aesthetic and functional lines. These lines not only demarcate different areas but also enhance the space's fluidity, marrying aesthetics with practicality for a family of four.

The uniqueness of the design is encapsulated in its 3D white fold concept, reminiscent of folded paper. This approach is twofold: the first fold involves the ceiling and walls, which allows sunlight to sculpt the interior with an ever-changing play of light and shadow. The second fold focuses on utility, with staggered lines that carve out a functional yet fluid design landscape.

Realization of this design was achieved through the careful selection of eco-friendly and textured materials, such as latex paint, oak wood veneer, and marble. These materials not only contribute to the project's sustainability but also add a tactile depth to the white space, creating a delicate balance of light and shadow as sunlight permeates the room.

The technical specifications of the project reveal a 205-square-meter apartment transformed into a large, open-plan living space. The strategic placement of windows in both public and private areas maximizes light exposure, enhancing the overall quality of life. The design also addresses the functional needs of the master bedroom and living room, ensuring that each space serves the client's lifestyle seamlessly.

White Folded Lines is more than just a design; it's an interaction with the natural world. The project emphasizes the advantages of lighting and the functionality of the public area, tailored to the usage habits of the residing family. The material selection is a subtle nod to the client's personality, allowing the texture to become an understated yet significant feature of the design.

Completed in November 2022 in Taichung City, Taiwan, this project is a culmination of meticulous research and creative problem-solving. The design overcame challenges such as excessive sunlight in the master bedroom and irregular wall surfaces due to beams and columns. Solutions like adjustable white panels and a thoughtful layout ensure continuity and meet storage needs without compromising on style.

Yu-Fong Chang's White Folded Lines is a celebration of minimalism, where clean lines and a white theme coalesce to forge a comfortable and natural home. The design's recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in 2024 underscores its excellence in integrating industry best practices and fulfilling the aspirations of a better living environment.
