Profound Dimensions: A Unique Office Design by Chang-zhi Xie

An Office Space Inspired by Nature and Minimalism

The design of Profound Dimensions, created by renowned designer Chang-zhi Xie, is a testament to the beauty of nature and the elegance of minimalism. This office space embraces simplicity while avoiding excessive decoration and contrasting colors. The three-dimensional design conveys harmony and contrast through the use of materials, construction techniques, and volume. The color logic of juxtaposing wood colors in light and dark shades of gray creates a space that is both visually appealing and comfortable.

This project involves a single-story commercial space with an interior area of about 30 square meters. The design takes into consideration the long rectangular shape of the space and the need to accommodate multiple purposes such as reception, discussions, exhibition, light food, and staff recreation. The overall space emphasizes an open configuration, with the front section pushed out by more than one meter to increase usable depth. The distinct facade design creates an exclusive brand image and enhances brand recognition.

The interior of Profound Dimensions combines movable furniture, lighting, ladder track, continuous surface shapes, and a bar area to versatilely define the functions of individual units. This allows for a comfortable space that can be dynamically used for various activities. The industrial style of the interior is understated yet distinctive, with shades of gray and warm-colored wooden textures creating a rich sensory experience.

Chang-zhi Xie prioritized energy conservation and waste reduction in the realization of Profound Dimensions. The materials selected for the project require minimum processing, have low levels of formaldehyde, and are mostly recyclable. From bake-finished sheet metal in celadon for the facade to plywood staining for the large cabinets under the interior beams, each material was chosen for its specific characteristics and contribution to the overall style of the space.

The interaction within Profound Dimensions is carefully designed to cater to different activity patterns and functional use frequencies. The front section of the space echoes the entrance foyer, highlighting the window opening at waist level. The long row of glass tiles on the left side of the facade draws in light and shadow, creating an engaging visual experience. At night, the convergence of light bands encircling the first and second floors, along with the backlit store sign, adds to the overall sensory exploration for visitors.

Profound Dimensions was completed in July 2022 in Taoyuan City, Taiwan. The design is a result of extensive research and creative problem-solving. The large display cabinets against the interior walls, for example, eliminate the sense of spatial confinement by using continuous materials to cover and beautify the structure. The staircase line of the upper floor is kept at the turn of the staircase, allowing light and shadow to flow freely.

One of the main challenges in creating Profound Dimensions was breaking away from the standard commercial facade image. The design boldly incorporates custom lacquered sheet metal components in celadon, giving the space an industrial ambiance. The window high bar is also integrated with hardware components, offering multi-functional use and a unique aesthetic. The top cover, covered with imitation cement film, can even be used as a notice board when closed.

Profound Dimensions has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
