At the heart of Christos Pavlou's architectural masterpiece, Courtyards, lies the concept of seamless integration between the home and nature. This design draws from the traditional Cypriot courtyard house, reimagined for contemporary living. The project, which began in 2018 in Nicosia, Cyprus, and completed in July 2020, has garnered international attention, featuring on platforms like Archdaily and Designboom.
The design's strength is its unique approach to the Cypriot rural house typology, creating a sanctuary that balances isolation with sociability. The structure's reversed concrete beam system and slim steel columns present a minimalistic aesthetic, while floor-to-ceiling sliding glazing systems dissolve the barriers between the interior and the lush courtyards. The use of Ytong blocks for the western wall provides both thermal insulation and a light, floating appearance.
Spanning a ground floor of 28 by 6.50 meters and an upper floor of 34 by 5.25 meters, Courtyards features three main green spaces. These courtyards, ranging from 36 to 78 square meters, are not just visual elements but are functional extensions of the living space. They serve as the lungs of the house, providing fresh air and a connection to the changing seasons, as well as private, protected areas for outdoor activities.
The design's interaction with its inhabitants is particularly noteworthy. The upper floor's bedrooms open onto long, uncovered balconies, blending the internal environment with the external. This creates a living experience where daily rituals are centered around the beauty of nature, with each courtyard offering a unique atmosphere.
Overcoming the challenges of an inhospitable landscape, Courtyards stands as a testament to the power of innovative design in creating comfortable and safe living conditions. The design's recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2024 underscores its creative ingenuity and its contribution to enhancing quality of life through the integration of art, science, and technology.
Christos Pavlou's Courtyards is more than just a residence; it's a philosophy of living that celebrates the magic of life's evolution. It's a design that not only respects the past but also embraces the future, offering a blueprint for sustainable and harmonious living.
