Heti: A Toast to Indigenous Roots and Social Impact

Cansu Dagbagli Ferreira's Packaging Celebrates Native Flora

Introducing Heti, a beverage brand that blends the flavors of home with a mission to empower tribal communities. Designed by Cansu Dagbagli Ferreira, this brand stands out with its unique approach to branding and packaging, drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of indigenous Dakota art.

The concept of "Effortless Wisdom" is at the heart of Heti's branding. It's not just about creating a visually appealing product; it's about forging a connection. The illustrations adorning each can are a nod to the geometric and symmetric patterns prevalent in Indigenous Dakota art, serving as a bridge between the consumer and the calming influence of nature's bounty. These designs are more than just aesthetic; they are a celebration of the native plants that infuse each beverage with its distinctive taste.

Heti, which translates to "Home" in the Dakota language, is not just a name—it's an experience. The seltzer drinks are crafted to evoke the essence of home, with flavors that are indigenous to North America. This brand goes beyond the palate, aiming to heal and remind consumers of the wisdom inherent in indigenous culture. The social impact is tangible, as Heti dedicates a portion of its revenue to enhancing the well-being of tribal communities.

The creation of Heti's packaging was a digital endeavor, utilizing the design thinking method of Diverge and Converge. The assets, developed as vector-based illustrations using Adobe Creative Suite, were then brought to life through the four-color printing technique, ensuring that each can is a vibrant representation of the brand's ethos.

Technical precision was paramount in the realization of Heti's packaging. The dimensions of the 12 oz can labels were meticulously measured to 151 x 195 mm, ensuring a perfect fit and seamless presentation. The project, spanning eight months between 2023 and 2024, was a transatlantic collaboration between the United States and France, showcasing the global nature of design and innovation.

Research into Dakota indigenous art and illustrations informed the design process, ensuring authenticity and respect for the cultural heritage that Heti embodies. One of the most significant challenges faced by the designer was striking the right balance between modern appeal and traditional values. The result is a monochrome illustration with strategic color accents that capture the spirit of indigenous cultures while fitting seamlessly into contemporary lifestyles.

In recognition of its innovative approach and social consciousness, Heti was honored with the Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2024. This accolade is a testament to the brand's commitment to excellence, combining art, design, and technology to not only delight the senses but also contribute positively to society. Heti is more than a drink; it's a statement of cultural appreciation and community support, served in a can.
